Picking stuff up and putting it down again.

You could cash that out anyway you want: Barbells, Dumbbells, Kettlebells, Sandbags, etc.

To be effective it has to be in the context of a programme that includes compound movements, sensible progression, adequate recovery. Add to this proper nutrition, hydration and sleep and we're really cooking. Chuck in some flexibility and mobility work and we could really be on to something...

If you had said "progressive resistance training" instead of "lifting weights" we could have included bodyweight progression programmes too (YAYOG, CC, etc), suspension trainers and more...

to me lifting weights means that i am progressively and consistently increasing the load in order to get stronger. this means that i rarely lift the same amount of weight unless i've stalled on progressing and in that case i take a break, deload and then return back at it to try and o past my last sticking point.

i lift weights to get stronger not just to keep my current level of strength

Haha, this. I do barbells, dumbells and kettlebells. Once in a while I will use the machines, but mostly for back exercises.

Actually didn't answer the OP after all that typing!

I consider everything I mentioned (and more) as fair game in the pursuit of progressive training. Having said that, I predominately do barbell work with the odd stint of kettlebelling here and there.

What exactly does lifting weights mean to me . . .

Doing whatever it takes to get stronger. I use bodyweight exercises, dumbbells, and a weighted backpack.

    Abject boredom...

    It's a necessary evil

To me, lifting weights is an essential part of life. Keeps me going and keeps me sane.

It is mostly barbell work, but I also use dumbbells, kettlebells, and bodyweight where appropriate. (Trust me, glute ham raises are definitely a challenge.)
