Cold Weather Workouts

I really like being outdoors, and I find the more exercise I do in the cold, the less I mind being outdoors in it. I'm planning on moving to northern Minnesota with my husband from a much milder climate, and I was wondering if anyone who lives in a cold climate has any advice in terms of gear and activities for times with extreme cold and lots of snow ( I can handle running and biking in the cold, but ice makes that idea terrifying).

Is ice skating really similar to rollerblading? I have had NO luck in my life with regular skates, but I really enjoy rollerblading and would try ice-skating if it's true.

Has anyone here tried snowboarding, skiing or snow-shoeing?

I really want to make the best of living up north and being able to burn off calories from Native American fry bread and Scandinavian cuisine!

Thanks!

Snow shoeing is amazing I love it and it is such a great workout. I have only tried cross country skiing and THAT is a workout think of the eliptical but with more resistance and with proper bio-mechanics. As for layering according to the running room rule of thumb for running is no more than 3 layers and to dress 10 degrees warmer then it is..

Skating is similar to rollerblading but once you are comfortable with skating on ice, they are the same but also very different and hard to explain still a great workout and a lot of fun. You will work out your lower extremities as well as your core, because you definitely do not want to fall often on the ice. Those are the experiences that I have had, hope that helps =)
Building snow people, snow ball fights and forts can also be a lot of fun as well as a work out.
    Have fun =)

I lived in Michigan for a few years. The greatest snow weather workout ever: Snow Shoveling. It'll have you huffing and puffing in just a few minutes.

Haha thanks for the responses. I'll be renting when I go up there, so I'm looking for places that include snow removal.
