swimming and gym

Hi there
I have been attending a gym for approx. 60 mins at a time 3-4 days a week doing a mix of strength and cardio. I have lost a total of 25gs but have another 40kgs to go .I'm on holidays for 5 weeks and are attending the gym 5-6 days a week for the same amount of time and also doing 45 mins of swimming laps at a slow pace, not very confident of the water, for 5-6 days a week.
A couple of questions...........doing squats and lunges at the gym hurts my knees. doing them in the pool is fine but does it give the same results. Do others swim for weight loss?

swimming while eating in a calorie deficit is great for weight loss. squatting in the pool isn't going to do anything for a healthy adult so look into finding a trainer or physical therapist qualified to show you either how to squat properly or how to strengthen your knees

From my experience (and I had buggered up my knees) try doing squats with a rubber ball between your legs, roughly the size of a soccer ball (or a tad smaller if you are short of stature).
  • if your gym has TRX then try doing assisted squats with TRX ...it is not that hard as it looks as given you hold on to the TRX bands you can use your upper body to help with pulling up - means less stress on your knees...
ask someone at your gym to help in getting started :)
