Help! hungry...

To start, a little about me: I'm only 5' tall and don't have a (relative) lot of weight to lose. This is my "second time around" at attempting weight loss here. I lost the weight originally by eating between 12-1300 (net) calories and exercising regularly. That calorie amount was generally manageable and possible to maintain. What I mean is, after the initial adjustment to lower calorie eating (and eventually healthier food choices) I didn't feel like that amount was a deprivation of any kind. I was on MFP consistently logging for close to a year and lost about 25 lbs slowly and safely, ending up very close to my goal weight.

About a year ago I stopped logging, tried to maintain on my own, and of course gained back about 15 of those original 25 lost.

This time around, I'm finding the adjustment to low-cal VERY difficult. I'm still aiming for ~1300 net cals, (not really exercising to any real extent at the moment, but planning on getting on that soon), but I am always always hungry. Even after individual meals i feel unsatisfied, like I could eat double the amount.

I don't know what's wrong with me. I know I'm not making the best food choices consistently, but it was not this hard the last time around. Argh. Please help! Advice, support, etc. wanted.

Thanks community.

  • Hey! Welcome back! It's a lifelong process - so first, take a deep breath. It's a literal marathon - not a sprint. There's a couple things that came to my mind though... if you are doing more weight training that will do a fast boost to your metabolism and create more hunger. Also, drink a lot of water - that can help to quelch the hunger pains.

I would also take a minute to stop and really think about your stomach. Are you hungry - or just wanting to eat more? It could be either or both at any given time. If you are really hungry - go for vegetables that have fewer calories per the amount of food you eat.

Finally - it could be that your stomach needs to shrink a little if you are truly feeling hungry. If you are used to eating more than you should right now - then imagine your stomach shrinking :).

I always think it's better to eat whole real foods versus the processed foods. For example - a half a homemade sandwich versus a lean cuisine may end up filling you up more.

Good luck! Stay strong!! And just keep showing up. It's a process!!

if you are hungry all the time then bump your calories by say 50 a day ..your body is trying to tell you something, listen to it..…and see if you feel more satiated…you can always go for higher protein stuff or more nutrient dense foods…
