So I have never been to an actual gym....ever! Not even to a fitness class. So far Ive done all my exercise at home, on my treadmill or using my 30 day shred/aerobics dvds. I always felt a bit embarrassed because of my weight and because I was unfit so preferred to work out in private. But after losing 22lbs and improving a hell of a lot with my fitness levels I am finally ready to face the gym!! I have just ordered a Shock Absorber sports bra (the running one coz it offers most support!) to keep my sizeable chest under control, :blushing: so as soon as that gets delivered, I think on Wednesday, Im off to the gym!! Never thought Id be brave enough to do this!

Im nervous though now, haha. Wish me look MFP pals! xxx

Just remember, most people in the gym are far too busy caring about themselves to worry about watching you so GO, HAVE FUN, AND MAKE BIG CAL BURNS!!!

    Hey

I felt the same when I first joined the gym, I though I would be the most unfit and biggest person there.. In reality, noone looks or judges - everyone is there for the same reason, get fit, in shape and to enjoy,

speakin for myself, im far to busy trying to keep going than to look around at other! I now love the gym and really get into a zone - i dont know what i think about when Im there - but certianly not anything that is worrying me etc

    enjoy and keep with it

    Good for you! :flowerforyou:
I'm sort freelancing now and can't afford a gym membership without a group (office) rate, but one thing that's great about the gym is that they have free training sessions for new members in case you need some instructions w/ the weight equipment, etc. Enjoy!

I went to the gym for the first time on Friday, and it was FUN! I got curious and tried all sorts of stuff. I ran my miles and did what I normally do, but I also explored. That's half the fun of going to a gym is exploring your boundaries and seeing how far you can push yourself. Go do it, and HAVE FUN!!!

I'm proud of you. Not every one there is fit, for example me. Take your time and don't over do it. It doesn't take much weight. Even 5 lbs is plenty. I had a trainer at one time who kicked my butt with 2.5 lbs weights. I felt like a weeny.

If you have already started watching your intake then exercise completes the deal.

    Good luck to you.

Most people at the gym are either worried about what they're doing or they, too, are new & they're worried you're watching them. Don't be afraid to ask the staff questions and make them show you proper technique, 100 times if that's what it takes (that's what they're there for)!
And great choice on the bra! SA is all I wear when I workout and I  them!
  • Thanks very much guys :-) Am really looking forward to it now (something I never thought Id say!!!) The gym Im going to is literally accross the road from my house so hoping that'll help keep me motivated! and its run by a neighbour of mine who has said I can have a free first session with a personal trainer to show me the ropes and help me work out a good exercise plan which is good. And because it has only just opened he is offering monthly membership with unlimited and unrestricted use for £20 which I think is really reasonable...? Anyway, its great to know that no one will be staring at the unfit new girl in the corner  Thanks again guys!! MFPers are the best.
  • I remember my first ever visit to the gym back in January when I started out. It was horrible. I had to have my photo taken for my ID card and then had my induction. Everyone looked fit and they were enjoying it! I thought, that will be me soon and it was. So stick at it babe and once you've been a few times it'll seem like you've been there forever!!

    PS... BUS WANKERS!!! ; )

That's pretty neato that the gym is so close to you. The one I go to is like 3 or 4 miles away. Still, not very far out of my way. Good for you. I get so happy when people say they are excited to exercise! lol  :flowerforyou:

Ta! Did you start going as soon as you started dieting or did you wait a while til you got bit fitter like I did...? Even though Im not as horrendously unfit as I was to start with, I am now only slightly less horrendously unfit! haha Nevermind, its all in a good cause! Next summer I WILL be in a bikini!

PS- The Lion, the witch and the speccy kid who s*** himself (I have to censor mine because Im a lady! )
  • I started going to the gym here back in July and like you was a bit nervous and concerned.I got over it by just telling myself that we are all here for the same reason...get healthy and get in shape. I found too that most everyone is friendly and helpful. You'll do great! Have fun and enjoy! PS- Great job on losing 22 Lbs!
  • Myself, I went straight into it. You know, start as you mean to carry on etc... I couldn't run back then. I walked for 10 mins on a slight incline and it killed me almost. I then got on the exercise bike and did 10 mins and that was more or less me done. I can now run 6 miles without stopping and go for hours on the bike plus an hours weight training and swimming after. I attend spinning classes now as well as body pump and tone zone. I enjoy it all.

Alright Spongebob 5hit his pants. I'm no lady! ; )

You may be horrendously unfit, but you are also incredibly unold. You will be disgustingly fit in no time at all.

Haha, bus wankers is a quote from a UK comedy show called the inbetweeners, its very very funny and also quite juvenile! I noticed that GrayJohn likes it too and posted on his profile about it :-)

I just joined a gym yesterday, and believe me when I say I have the same inhibitions as you. I just feel sooo out of place as the fat chick on the exercise equipment!! But it is going to be so good in the long run. I have a feeling I'll be going there often and eventually even joining in with those group exercise classes they have. Be brave and have fun while you're there!!

ps. they show The Inbetweeners on BBC America here in the states. Hubby and I watch that show, it's hilarious!! we love it and most other british comedy shows as well :)

One thing I do since I can't afford a trainer is believe it or not, I watch youtube. They have great video's on how to use the machines correctly so you don't get hurt and great weight lifting videos which I just started doing recently. I had been doing some of the machines wrong and can really tell the difference now that I am doing it correctly. You see a lot of people doing the exercises wrong. And ask the trainers. My gym is a 24 hour gym so not that many trainers around so check out you tube, it really helps.
