Workout rituals

I've seen lots of different rituals people do before lifting or just before a lift and some are really funny while some are interesting to watch.
Personally for me I have to rerack the weights in my gym (all of them) just right before I work out, or I'll keep looking over to fix them. Everyone knows that if I'm on the gym floor and they don't rerack, I'll call them out on it so most just oblige. I rerack them so each bench, Hammer machine, Smith and Power racks all have the same amount of plates on each one (5's, 10's, 25's etc.)
Gonna be fun after the 1st of the year trying to do this.

Thank you for all your efforts in keeping your gym organized! I hate the mess when I am working out - I don't make one and I don't leave one. :flowerforyou:

My biggest question is - if someone can work out with 90# DB, why can't that someone move them 5 feet back from whence they came? Are they suddenly too heavy?

If I'm going to unrack something I know is going to be a challenge, I'll step up to the bar, clap my hands together once then get in position to do the lift.

It works like a mental palette-cleanser for me. Before the clap is all the crap that is extraneous to the lift. After the clap: there is only the lift, nothing else.

Actually people think I'm weird like that, but other than that, I'm one of the coolest trainers in the gym. I say hi to everyone and know many by their first names. I give out free advice all the time and know that members appreciate it.

There's this guy who does the "you got this!!" chant every time he lifts. No spotter, he just works out by himself. Dude is in great shape though.

Well I work out in a garage/workshop alone in a power rack and would feel like a bit of a prat speaking motivational phrases to myself!

Definitely like to have a mental pivot point - especially if you're working out alone. Achieving focus is important if you don't want to hurt yourself!
  • When I'm lifting something that's pretty heavy I stand there, kind of stretch a little bit, move my feet around and whisper: "You got this. You got this! You can do it! Come on Jennie don't be a wuss! YOU GOT THIS!!!"

And then when I'm lifting and I'm really super close to failure (and my husband is spotting me which means failure doesn't exist LOL) I stamp my feet as I'm lifting. The people at the fitness center I used to work out at at my old company would laugh at me and say "Jennie's lifting heavy! Her feet are stamping!" LOL

This isn't an intentional ritual, but I get "happy feet" as I prepare to lift. Squat, DL, OHP, even bench, doesn't matter... My feet dance all over the place when I'm approaching the bar. Other than that, my sequence of exercises is kind of a ritual because it results in all equipment being neatly back in its place and re-racked at the end. If only I could do the same in the kitchen. :ohwell:

Chickens sometimes are stamping their feet and sometimes squatting when rooster is around (its a fact, you can look it up), just like you do when your husband is there... just saying. Pooook, pok, pok, pok!

Yeah - you won't need to bother doing any workout other than this.

    The perfect trainer!
My trainer does the same - reorganises the kettlebell rack based on their size...And rearranges the indoor rowers so that they all face the same direction at the same angle...:) I think a bit of OCD is absolutely fine...we all have things like that..My ritual is filling my water bottle - I use that time to get focused on what I am going to do in the gym...and then I go to do some rowing..I have to do some rowing at the start and at the finish of my workout..
