I'm starting to jog (first time in forever) and after about 3 mins into it my shins start to hurt. I cant figure out why. I think it might have something to do with my shoes, do you have any suggestion for good running shoes? I wear Nike Shox but they seem a bit heavy.
Thanks!!!!!

Shin splints/shin pain is usually caused beak weak calf muscles. Build up those calves and your legs will be happier! Simple exercise: stand on the edge of a stair and raise and lower yourself (on one foot).0

It has everything to do with your shoes (well more than likely)! Every person has different shoe needs...your best bet is to go to a proper running store and get a gait analysis done. You can find the one closest to you here: http://www.runnersworld.com/store/search/1,7978,s6-240-417-0-0,00.html0

I went into road runner and got all fitted for my running shoes. Everyone is built and runs differently, it can be a little spendy but is extremely nice to know that you aren't doing your body damage while running. I have a NewBalance pair and absolutely love them. I am still a beginner (ive been a beginner for a long time
) and haven't tried them long distance, but I have ran over a mile with no discomfort.

You can help this by starting slower... then increasing to a normal running speed after 5 - 10 min or so. :flowerforyou:0

As you build up your muscles in your calves your shin splints should start to go away. In the mean time you should go to your local running store and they can custom fit you for shoes. I love New Balance, but I had a great pair of Nikes also. Compression socks may help as well. Good luck.0

Go to RunnersWorld.com. its a great site or go to a sports store and talk to someone about your problem. it could just be your muscles are sore from the exercise...mine hurt in the beginning as well...really bad...but it went away after a week or so.0

I love my Nike Shox. They are old as dinosaur ****, but I do not want to have to break in a new pair... Just my .020

Another great running store is FitNiche, they're very helpful and super friendly.0

I love the Nike Free runs. They are light and they fit so comfortable.0

I hear ya!
I went through the same dilemna a couple of years ago when I decided (begrudgingly) to start a running program. When I first started, I just used my old aerobics shoes that I used for turbo kickbox other gym classes. After a month of running 3x a week, I noticed pains on my left foot. A friend recommended getting my run analyzed. Luckily we have a Road Runner Sports in the area.
So the folks filmed me running barefoot on the treadmill and boy, was that an eyeopener. Apparently, I am a heavy right foot inward pronator and my left foot is trying to compensate for that pronation hence the pain. I tried 3 pairs of shoes and ended up with the Saucony Pro Grid Hurricane Wide. Wide! I never thought I'd be a wide! They also recommended "Surefeet" shoe inserts and padded socks for running. Roadrunner Sports or other running store, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to analyze your running pattern and fit you properly.
I'm not going to say that I jump for joy every time I run. I still sometimes dread runs but that's because I'm just not a natural runner. I prefer cycling and swimming. But I have to say, it has made my running experience so much better. No more pain on my shins and joints.
Good luck!0 -

For the love of all things holy, get good shoes. They can make all the difference in the world! When I started running, I was wearing the New Balances that I'd bought in college, and I was having arch pains. Bought some new Aces and BAM, pain was gone. Like I was running on friggin' marshmallows.0

u may have shin splintz i do. use the eliptical and do a difficult corse its much better for your joints and gets the same affect done0

What terrain are you running on?0

as awesome as nike products are, nike shox actually really suck as shoes.
if you are serious about running, invest in some good quality asics or new balance.0 -
There actually is a tendon that runs from the top of your foot up into the muscles of the lower leg, these muscles don't get worked very much by regular daily activity and tend to hurt when starting out or increasing mileage. Yes, you want to build your calves too but you need to stretch the FRONT of your leg, easier said than done.
runnersworld.com just had an article with examples of stretches just for this problem, I have found it helps to do even when they aren't buggin me. There are several articles and info regarding all types of injuries and I use that as one of my main sources of running info!
In the meantime you should stretch and ice and you should give serious consideration to going to a running store and being evaluated for shoes that fit your specific foot structure........worth every penny!!! I had a pair of nikes that I loved then I went to the foot doctor because of some foot issues and he evaluated and I found that asics and an insert have helped a great deal, I also like saucony and new balance!0 -
Another common cause of shin splints is thought to be the heal strike. Which is why certain shoes can be better than others. I've used a running plan that focuses on a mid-foot strike vs a heal strike and have never had problems with shin splints.
I second the post on the exercise for it as well. Good solution.
I run in a minimalist shoe, which admittedly isn't for everyone, my podiatrist also recommended foot exercise to strengthen and flex the foot better easing the ankle stresses.0
