leg/arm weights good or bad?

I have been wearing leg weights while out walking and while cleaning the house. I was told off the other day by a coworker I ran into while out saying it was going to ruin my legs. The internet seems pretty divided too on if they are good or bad as well. So my question is leg and arm weights. Do they help or do they hinder?

I believe that they can/do damage joints.0

I have been using both, off and on, for about 40 years. Hiking, when doing martial arts forms and shadow boxing. I don't run in them.
I'm 59 and still playing competitive soccer. I haven't suffered any joint problems.
The design has improved dramatically over the last 40 years.0 -
From what I remember, they are fine to wear while doing strength exercises - like leg lifts or whatever, but should never be used during cardio activities.0

IMHO, this sums it up nicely. http://www.sparkpeople.com/community/ask_the_experts.asp?q=84
If you want to add some intensity while walking or cleaning, a weighted vest would be better. That wouldn't impact your gait the way ankle weights do.0 -

I like that suggestion. Thanks!0
