Hmmm...I did really well today, but then I ate back the majority of my exercise calories. Logically, I should still be ok, but I've been hearing that eating them back is not a good thing. What do y'all think?

I think my prob is that I eat back to many - have not lost any weight in about 3 weeks now and I'm wondering if that is why.

it def can slow down your weight loss, but you should still loose the amount your calories are programmed for (like I ate all my exercise calories last week and lost 1 lb... which is what my program is supposed to do). For me, that is a-ok because sometimes I just need to be able to eat a little chocolate... u know? and those extra exercise calories give me the cushion to do that.

This blog explains why you should eat back your exercise calories....

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/10589-for-those-confused-or-questioning-eating-your-exercise-calo

However I try and eat 50-75% of mine back as MFP can overestimate. :drinker:

Eating back exercise calories is a personal choice tho... i really do recommend reading the above blog. :flowerforyou:
  • I've also seen conflicting advice on this. I have a really hard time eating mine back. I'm on a 1200 cal a day but I've really bumped up my exercise. Like today I burned over 1200 cal at the gym and doing 30 day shred so I know there is NO WAY I can eat 2400 cal in a day! I just joined here last week and just been doing this a week now and have my first weigh-in tomorrow (scared to death to see the results) so I guess I'll know more tomorrow :).

It depends on what your calorie goal is to begin with. If it's around 1200, eating back at least half, if not most, of the exercise calories is best, just so you don't end up getting too few. If your goal is around 1500 you don't have to eat them all and you will lose more weight faster if you don't eat too many.

It's up to you whether you want to eat the exercise cals or not. I know a lot of people don't. I eat at least some of them because I'll be too hungry if I don't. And remember, one day won't do any damage. You won't gain weight, your metabolism won't change just because you ate more cals one day. So you'll be just dine.

    That's just Fine, not dine!

One handed typing with a squirmy baby is tough!

My opinion: It depends how often you exercise.
If you are mostly focused on dieting, and only work out about once every 10 day, or whenever the mood strikes, it may be less important to eat back those calories.
If you're exercising 3-4 times a week, and that is part of your long term strategy, you need to make sure you're supporting at least part of that activity with food energy.
  • Thanks for the input everybody.
