Me and my fiancee are thinking of doing some sort of cleanse come the new year. What are your thoughts, and do you suggest any specific product?

My thoughts are that they are totally useless and all they do is "cleanse" your wallet of your hard earned money. What's wrong with eating a healthy diet and exercising?

What are you planning on cleasing? Your body doesnt build up toxins or anything. Just eat lots of veggies and est whole foods and you get the same result.

You can do a cleanse if you want to! I think they are legit, although this word is not specific. What do you mean by a cleanse? Many cleanses marketed are, IMO, kinda harsh/expensive or even silly. But there are some good ones.

All specific 'cleanse' products are nothing more than hype to take your money.

I suggest that you simply eat fresh fruits and vegetables, along with a moderate amount of protein, and plenty of water.

The day after I started my diet my refrigerator broke and I had to throw all of the food in it away. It was sad, but it was probably one of the best things that could have helped me with my diet. It saved me the mental issues with "eating up" what was left in the fridge. I started with a blank slate and I was able to restock the fridge with fresh foods and lots of produce

Your body doesn't need to be cleansed internally. If you want to use a cleanse as a sort of reset button, can I suggest looking for an external one?

    Tis the season.

    Clease? Soap and water.

Your insides don't need a cleanse (assuming your organs are all functioning properly). Any weight people claim to lose while doing a cleanse is pretty much water weight, and will come right back when you start eating normally again.

Calorie deficit, do some exercise, drink water, take rest days, get good sleep, repeat.

Legit in what sense? And what research data do you have to back up this assertion? Exactly what does a cleanse do and how does it do it? Please cite legitimate scientific researched proof sources.

If the OP gets back into the conversation that would be great. In the meantime, why don't YOU answer the OP?

Well, I'm asking you. You are the person that made the statement above. Please do educate us on the legitimacy of cleanse based on the data you've found.

    My thoughts exactly.

I stick to what I've said on other threads. Popeye's spicy fried chicken and Texas Pete hot sauce. That ought to do it.

There is no reason to create another thread on cleanses.. there are plenty of science based threads that disprove the need for a cleanse. Its just another tool the nutrition industry uses to make money just like diet pills.

Save your money and drink lots of water and take laxatives. Its the exact same thing.

If you want to "detox", or kick the holiday bloat, just eat super clean for a few weeks. No carbs, sugar etc. Stick to veggies, fruit and lean meats.

So in other words, you got nothing. Just that you think cleanses are "legit". Got it.

The reason why you got nothing is because there is nothing. Not a single scientific paper that documents their benefit. "Cleanses" are nothing but charlatan marketing of voodoo magic from the land of woooo.

No need to start my own thread. There is too many nonsense "cleanse" threads as it is.

Well, she really has not clarified what her cleansing goal is....or what she means by "cleanse." Your prescription for laxatives will do......what?

I'm a big fan of Taco Bell, clears you right out.

Why don't you and your fiancee just schedule a colonoscopy. That stuff you take before will clean you riiiight out.

Maybe she had something other than her colon in mind? Hard to tell, since she has apparently abandoned the discussion.

i hear sugar free gummi bears are good

as is a bowl of kashi go lean crunch

although why a couple would want to induce pooping together is beyond me. is that like the new sexy thing for 2014?
  • I'm the OP's fiancee and thank you guys for your input. I think we'll just stick to our hi protein- lo carb diet and drink plenty of water. We were specifically looking at the acai berry cleanse, but this thread, and some other research I've done has made it clear that that isn't the way to go. Thank you everyone who gave good input.

Also: He is my Fiance, I am his Fiancee the extra E indicates that I am feminine.

A lot of the purported benefits of a cleanse are in regard to digestion, I kind of assume that is where you're headed with the original question. Lacto fermented vegetables and drinks, such as sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir, kimchi, etc. will do wonders for the digestion when taken regularly and over a period of time. "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon, has some great recipes and examples regarding societies around the world that eat fermented foods as a regular part of their diet and enjoy superior health to Americans as a result. These are not my personal conclusions; the book is full of citations from different studies, meta analyses, and so forth.

I personally do 3 or 4 cleanses a year. I like to do vegetable juice cleanses--I have a juicer and make them myself. In order to slow the absorption of natural sugars from the juice (if you also use fruit) you can put a tablespoon or two of heavy cream into a full glass. Fat will slow the absorption of sugar and mitigate the glycemic response. I don't take any additional products. I lose weight with each cleanse and I've kept it off, but the reason I do it is because it makes me feel great. I don't need a double blind, pharmaceutical sponsored study to prove that they work for me. Practice common sense and try things (within reason) for yourself. All the fantastical gains in science and all the empirical evidence from studies funded in this country or others doesn't change the fact that we are the unhealthiest people in the industrialized world. Clearly numerous things prescribed by mainstream thinking as "normal" and "healthy" are not working.
Also, a great source to begin to understand the effects of toxin exposure from common everyday sources is "The Toxic Consumer" by Karen Ashton.
