Hip and knee pain while running

So I invested in the good shoes...great warm winter running gear...I worked my way up to running just under 7 miles without stopping (outside-combination trails and pavement) and I LOVE to run...but I'm getting a lot of pain in my hip sockets and my knees...I know it's probably my form but...anybody have advice on this? Ways to maybe stretch ahead of time that help limber you up or anything like that? Doing Pilates and a morning run tomorrow and I'd like to prevent feeling as sore as I did the last time

It would be a good decision to make an appointment with an ortho doctor to have your knee and hop checked out. I have had knee problems for what seems like eons...but my issues are a combo of different things which made taking input from others difficult. I do suggest getting a foam roller (I love mine) and rolling out your quads, hammies and IT band...calves would be good too and get your gait checked to make sure that you are wearing shoes that your body needs the most (neutral, moderate and stability shoes).
I wish you the best of luck!0 -

In the army we have to run an insane amount so I feel your pain the most important thing is stretching and warming up, try dynamic moves instead of static stretching but I do both and also stretching afterwords, another thing that has saved my life as a runner is foam rolling its some pretty amazing stuff, and also make sure your shoes are the right kind, while most good running shoes are expensive they are made differently I ended up with asics gel fortitudes that I really like I stay away from nike but thats just me, try going to an actual runners store and they can scan your feet for the arch type and watch you run and give you advice on form and shoes to help with what your experiencing another great thing is get into organized running, groups go out together all the time and serrounding yourself with the same kind of people can make all the difference in the world. best of luck in all things0

Just for info. I am currently dealing with a client who had a hip replacement done. His was from constant running while in pain. You may want to consult an orthopedist to ensure that you're not causing more damage than you need to.

Egads...
My little sister did have a hip injury due to running but didn't need a replacement for it. She did need surgery and rehab. I'd like to avoid that.
My shoes have custom insoles that go inside them. When I bought the shoes, they analyzed my gait and the soles of my feet, etc...I think the insoles were more expensive than the shoes were LoL0 -

Foam rolling would be good to do, if you don't already. It really saves me from major soreness and tightness issues with my IT band.
Dynamic stretching and proper warm-up are important. Static stretch afterwards.
Definitely check in with a doctor in case you have something serious developing.
For form, I had to adjust mine so that I wasn't over-striding on longer distances (over 5 miles). I shortened my stride to make sure my ankle, knee, and hip are in alignment when I land on each foot. Helps with impact absorption on the joints.0 -
I've had hip and lower back pain caused by a very tight psoas muscle - which is the major hip flexor muscle. Could not run at all for ages, even walking made me limp for a while, and even now after lots of treatments and regular stretching I am limited in how long I can run for to about 25 mins max.
Might it be that?
If you google some good stretches for psoas there is some good advice out there (I especially iike one CHEK institute stretch which has a video). And as everyone else says also stretch the hamstrings, quads and achilles. Building up my glutes also helped me a lot as these are big part of maintaining good balance and posture. Lastly doing exercises for strong knee ligamentsis always a good idea.
Certainly none of this can hurt you and are worth a try whilst you seek out medical advice to diagnose the root cause..0 -
I kept running when I had knee pain and now I can't run more than once a week or my knees will flare up.0

I always used to suffer from insane knee and pelvic pain, the best advice that was ever given to me was to build up the strength in my legs and hips.
There are specific weight exercises for these areas and I have to say that after I massively increased the weights in my leg workouts, I ran a half marathon and it was the best, most comfortable run I've done ever, even out of the 5 or 10km that I have done.
I strongly recommend researching exercises to strengthen the muscles you need to support you while you are running, foam rolling and lots of stretching0 -
Foam Roller. It's a must if you're a runner.0
