I know I'm new here, but

And I really dont want to come in swinging, but whats with all the detox and cleansing threads? Is that a "thing" or encouraged here? If so, and I say this kindly, I may be in the wrong place.

Dont get me wrong, if you like cleansing and it makes you feel good, by all means, do it. Its just not my cup of tea (pun intended)

    DEFINITELY NOT ENCOURAGED.

It's just what people think they should do to lose weight fast. It in NO WAY lines up with MFP's goals, and it never, ever, ever works. It's total BS.

You sound like you've got a good BS sensor going, you'll do well here.

You're off to a good start.

No, we don't encourage detoxing and honestly today has been a virtual onslaught of detox threads. I imagine it's just post-Christmas food regret.

From what I've seen by some of the people who are extremely knowledgeable here in MFP land. It is generally frowned upon by the people who have made long term commitments to health. A few a my wife's friends did them and you here how great they are how they lost 15-21 lbs. two weeks later it's "well yes I gained the weight back but I feel great"

welcome and certainly not encouraged and most have pretty snarky comments about them (I happen to agree with them just thought I would share)

You're in the right place. Most people here are supporters of healthy habits, rather than quick-fixes

No, it's absolutely not encouraged here. Those threads tend to pop up around this time of year because people think the new year is a great time to start a new phase of life and they want to have some kind of "kick-start" to the process. They're generally discouraged by people who support sustainable lifestyle changes and offer up good scientific evidence.

You're probably in the right place. The people who stick around believe in different methods, though the "calories in, calories out" formula is generally a common theme among them. The "clean eating" vs. "not-clean eating" debate is an ever-present battle on the threads. What I've gotten out of reading SO many different ones is that you should find what works for you and do it. Trial and error.

It's that time of year-people making new years resolutions and grand plans to 'jumpstart' their weight loss. They're setting themselves up for failure before they even start  The 'cleanse/detox' posts should calm down in a few weeks.

    You can stay.

The detox threads are half misinformed people and half employees peddling their wares.

    DETOXES ARE NOT THE ANSWER!

I am taking a 'detox' from the forums in January, because it seems it'll only get worse during January

Most of the people who have been around for a long time will dog-pile on someone who suggests a cleanse or a specific diet (my favourite was the woman who wanted to eat nothing but boiled eggs for a month). It can get pretty entertaining actually.

There was a show on HLN last night about a man (then 2 men) who did a juice-only diet for weeks and weeks. That might have something to do with all the threads today.

I see. The comment counts kept me away. A cleanse thread with 30 comments and I figure its a bunch of juice recipes.

The only detox I did was stopping the fast food and soda, ohhh, the headache I had for about a week was fierce, now it's just water, milk or wine.

I'd never even heard of a cleanse until I started on here last year. I don't really honestly understand what it is supposed to be. It's supposed to flush things out of your body? And people think that's real? If you don't want it in your body, don't eat it. Or wait until you poop it out. Right?

You will fit in quite well around here then my dear.

Sorry that the silly detox threads that always pop up at this time of the year made it seem like MFP encouraged it. We don't. The site is about HEALTHY and SUSTAINABLE ways to lose weight. Not fads and BS.

I would actually read some of the threads. Honestly, they are good for a laugh!
