Holding a glass of water to avoid food

I'm hosting an annual New Year's Day brunch, but I've been worrying about the snacks I always end up eating. They are all good (to me), since it's my party. Mindless grazing is a lifelong habit that's proving hard to end. So I'm planning on holding a glass of ice water throughout. Maybe I'll chew some gum too.

Anyone got other suggestions?

Eat something filling before, so you don't snack if it's of dire concern. I honestly would be holding wine in the other hand, though and just enjoy yourself rather than avoid. . :drinker:

Try to keep the crowd away from the table of food. If you're directly in front of the food for the whole party, it's nearly impossible to avoid nibbling.

Since you're holding the party and you know the food you'll have, how about logging small portions of each of the foods you want to sample and make a plate of those foods? Then you know what you can have, you'll have it, and you can eat it. Instead of grazing from the table, graze from your plate. Maybe even setting aside portions of each as you prepare it, then you can grab the pre-portioned/measured foods as you feel hungry.

You can also make sure you have plenty of veggies to snack on-carrots, celery, etc. Drinking lots of water is a good plan, but I think denying yourself makes it too tempting. Regulate what you want to eat, but don't deny yourself anything.

    Happy New Year!

Great suggestion! Going to need to do this for my next party....or maybe even try to do something like it tonight, as the folks hosting are trying to watch what they eat, and know I am as well, they are not going to think me to weird for loading up a plate to limit myself. And the others...well they either think I am odd and just don't know me, or they know me and know that I am.

add some fruit and veggie trays. Or cheese and meat trays.

If I know I am going to a get together with awesome (yet fattening) food, I drink a protein shake before hand. Its filling, slow to digest, and keeps me from over indulging.

I usually cut loose, but if its been too soon since my last cheat day...I do the protein shake.
