getting past the 10 mark

Hi everyone,
This is just my third day with myfitnesspal. My daughter has been a member for almost a year and has lost about 40 pounds. My problem (other than eating to much) is no matter what I try I seem to only loose about 10 pounds and then it just stops ! I am 64 and I'm sure my age has something to do with it, but it is just so aggrivating. I need to lose about 40 to 50 pounds; not only to look better, but also to stay heathy. I work 9 to 10 hours a day at a desk, so I don't have a lot of spare time; and usually by the time I get home I don't really WANT to do anything ! Any suggestions?

I can relate to the 10 lbs and stopping problem... I've had plateaus several times during this process, but if you can keep to your monitoring of calories in and exercise, you WILL get past those first 10!
In terms of exercise, you have to find something that works for you, but a 9-10 hr/day desk job is torture! So many studies express the importance of moving throughout the day, so even if you're job keeps you at your desk, make a point to stand up and walk around every 30 minutes or so. A hike up the stairs might be a great energy boost!0 -
Hi, I'm sort of in the same boat. I joined 3 days ago as well. I'm 51 and would like to lose 30 lbs. I sit at a desk all day as well. What I did was join a gym and go directly when I leave the office and jump into whatever class they have. For me that works. Once you're there and hear the music, you just do it. If you go home and think you're going to do something then, the couch is too comforting0

I would say just stick with it. I work at a desk as well and even when I don't get a workout in, I try to get in whatever walking/moving I can- commercial walking, extra stairs, walking at lunch break etc.
I often have lost about 10 lbs and then kinda petered out, but now that I am at nearly 15, with a great support group here I think, looking back I just hit a plateau, got discouraged and when my attention shifted, so did my weight. Everyone gets stuck at least once in a while - just be mentally prepared to give it a few weeks with no loss when it happensand you'll get past that marker!
Good luck!0 -
Exercise in the morning before work or on your lunch break.0

The good news is, if you stick to this site, and log exercise and food carefully you will get beyond the first 10. I lost the first 10 pounds a hundred time before getting to MFP. I was so surprised when the 10 turned into 20 then almost 30. It's consistancy. Logging daily teaches you what you need to concentrate on. You will identify the culprit when you look back on a months worth of data. Welcome and be encouraged.0
