p90x success?

My boyfriend and I have recently started p90x. Has anyone out there had success with this? Did you use the nutrition plan? If so, did you use any substitutes for the recovery drink (ie, chocolate milk), bars, and shakes?

I lost 30lbs doing P90X but I did not use the Nutrition plan. I just followed the calorie plan on MFP and tried to eat a balanced diet. I did use the recovery drink, since they sent me a free jug of it with the program but I didn't see any real benefit from it, so I didn't purchase anymore when I ran out. it was tasty but at THAT price, it wasn't that tasty

The only thing I didn't like about P90X, Tony Horton gets REALLY annoying after a few weeks:laugh: It was fun though, Good luck!

Yes, I used the basic nutrition plan, aka the one with the 7 protein blocks, 2 carbs, etc. I lost 51lbs, and my wife lost 42lbs. By the way don't get discouraged your husband will have better results in the beginning, your will come in phase 2 and 3. Woman generally need phase 1 to build the initial lean muscle mass so the weight loss is not there, but the loss of inches will be. My wife only lost 6 lbs in the first phase, but 13 inches total.

    Good luck!

Oh I tried the P90X bars they were good, but you can find just as good at the local stores for half the price.

Tried the recovery drink to, did not like it. I found that I liked the Amplify Wheybolic better

I did P90X without following the nutrition plan, but did make the following changes to my diet:

Quit adding sugar to anything (like coffee-- you'll get used to it after a while!)
Switched to nonfat milk from 2%. (Now I go with unsweetened almond milk)
Cut out bread where I could... replaced sandwiches @ lunch w/ wraps, no bread with dinner.
Upped the veggies by a lot (broccoli, carrots, salads...)
Added lots of eggs / egg whites (omlettes, fritattas... 4 egg whites + 1 egg and you almost don't realize its not all egg!)
Cut out dessert (now I do 4 oz plain nonfat greek yogurt + 5 g honey after dinner)
Aside from coffee and tea, I drink nothing but water.

Eat mainly "whole" / unprocessed foods. While it may sound dogmatic - if it comes in a wrapper, its probably crap...

Pay attention to your calories by logging everything here for a couple of weeks. I never set an exact target, but by paying attention to this you start to make better choices (2 slices of bread = 200 calories, 1 low-carb wrap = 80 calories, etc!). You'll also start to notice that a lot of what you may have thought was "healthy" (granola, most yogurts, "energy bars", etc) are junk. And you'll never eat another pop-tart or Snickers bar again!

Unfortunately, it's true-- you won't get the results without getting your diet right!

P90x is a solid program. Me and my wife did the program many years back when it first came out and can't recall how much we lost. I still use the cardio workouts from time to time. We didn't follow the diet plan at all, but we still saw results. As with anything you get back what you put in - it isn't magic. It is also more of a fat loss program, so don't expect to gain a lot of muscle with it. The goal is to get shredded or lose fat while minimizing muscle loss.

IMHO all of the "extra" stuff like bars, shakes, etc. are just additional ways for BB to make money. Nothing wrong with that, they are convenient, but not necessary. Don't feel like you have to buy them.

You will see the best results if your diet is dialed in. I would suggest you either use their nutrition booklet and set your MFP goals according to their calorie and macro targets. Or you could use MFPs calorie target, this calculator for calorie estimates (http://p90xcalories.com/), and set custom macro targets based upon the P90x phase.

Hope that is clear and good luck! Feel free to PM me with any questions.
  • My wife and I are also looking to start P90x for the second time. I would like to follow some form of nutrition plan because I am sure that will keep me going with it alot longer than without. I just find that all the information they give you is far too much for me to process for some reason. I am curious if anyone has any information on the macro percentages and how to eat by following that with the suggested caloric intake for the program. I truly enjoyed the meal plan that is associated with INSANITY it was much easier to follow and had great recipes, I am just not sure how well that plan translates into the P90x program... If you get some good suggestions in regards to this that works for you, please post it!! Thanks!

I just dug out my nutrition guides for both those programs and according to the material I have it looks like the Insanity eating plan is quite close to the Phase 2 P90x meal plan. Insanity doesn't give you macro goals but from skimming the meals, many of them are somewhat equal in protein and carbs and a relatively low fat content. I'd guess that you would end up being near a 40 / 40 / 20 macro breakdown.

IMHO you would be fine using the Insanity nutrition booklet while doing P90x. Just make sure you adjust your calories as needed to get the weight loss (or gain) that you desire. You could even use the recipes from both books - just don't eat over your calorie target.

Nice came across this post def need advice I will be starting p90x either Thursday or Monday and I saw the nutrition guide I'm 5'3 it estimates I should eat 2400 seems high and the macros are 50/30/20 protein/carbs/fat recipes look good some require alot of time and ingredients I was wondering if anyone is doing a cheaper version not time consuming also suggestions on the snack they recommend beach body items like protein powder recovery formula protein bar that are on the cheaper side and fit into daily micros
