i went clothes shopping this weekend at a few of my favorite stores, ('cato', 'christopher and banks', etc.). fun! i grabbed smalls in everything... and several of them were too big! so here is my dilemna:

i am short (5 foot) and currently weigh 123. my goal weight was 113, which is on the high end of a normal weight for my height. after not fitting into smalls at my favorite stores, i am not so sure i want to get down to 113 if that will mean i can no longer find clothes that fit at my favorite stores (they do not carry extra small).

do i stay at 123 and be 'overweight' but still be able to shop where i want, or do i continue to lose weight and find new stores to shop in that carry extra smalls? what would you do?

May be time to find new favorites. Or check the juniors sections if they have one (not really familiar with these brands). Or if they have a website, you may be order to order extra smalls.

I say get to your goal weight and find new stores! There are TONS of places you can shop online if you don't have stores close to you that you like that carry your size. Don't sell yourself short because stores cater to a "growing" American population!

are you happy with the way your body looks right now? If you still feel "pudgey" or whatever, then i would say, go and lose the extra weight IF IT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY. You can always find new favorite stores OR just get your fave clothes tailored

if YOU'RE comfortable and YOU feel healthy where you are, then STOP. If you do want to get to that goal, then keep going. There will be other stores you can go to. BMI isn't really a good indicator of weight if that's what you're using. I have a large frame, and where as BMI wants me to be 115-150, I think 165-170 will be a better area for me to be in.

Checking online is a great idea, lots of stores have extended sizes online, like 00 size pants and extra small shirts.

If you're happy with your body at your current weight, don't force yourself down to a smaller weight because an arbitrary number like BMI tells you it's healthy. Try measuring body fat percentage as a better indicator. You might already be well within a healthy BF%. Also, maybe you could expand your shopping and find some new stores that run smaller :)

That is a question for your mirror and your family/friends!!

I am also short (5'1) and I once lost weight down to 110, which really doesn't sound that little. However, it was impossible for me to maintain, and now that I look back at my pictures, I realize I had gone past slim right to bony! But I couldn't see it myself at the time, and I didn't listen to the comments of my friends and family. Now I'm a lot older and know I would look really wrinkly at that low of a weight! Ask the people who care the most and who will be the most honest. And know that if you find it impossible to maintain, perhaps that is telling you something.

Do you feel good/healthy at your current weight?
Do you feel good about the way that you look and they way your clothes fit?

If the answer is yes then I would recommend that stay where you are.

If the answer is no then you should continue your weight loss journey. There are always other stores.

I wouldn't make this about clothes or shopping but I also wouldn't make this about a number on the scales. I don't think I would consider 10 pounds one way or another as a deal breaker.

There are clothes out there to fit small sized people.. you just have to find them. I wouldn't stop trying to lose weight unless you feel you ARE at a healthy weight and will be happy there. Certain brands/mfg run small than others. Try different stores!

thanks for the comments! part of the dilemna is not only buying clothes that fit, but knowing i look good now and can be done versus knowing i will also look good ten pounds from now but i have to continue losing weight.

it is true that there are other stores out there to shop at, but style/comfort and price point are important considerations too. i will NOT be having a shirt altered after paying $20-$50 for it, nor do i enjoy internet shopping - i want to try it on and make sure it looks good on ME, not a model. one place i will still be able to shop is ann taylor, regardless of which size i choose.

at 123, i am a size 6-8 pants, depending on style, and a small shirt. i have 'curves' and feel sexy. i have areas (upper arms, thighs and stomach) that i would like to slenderize and firm up, which would also probably be true at the smaller weight. at 113, i will be a size 2-4 pants, depending on style, and an extra small shirt. i will not have curves, but will feel very petite and can possibly get away with dressing younger than my age.

i am not sure which appeals to me more.

Sounds like that's a question only you can answer. I know for me personally I'm looking to get to a size, not necessarily a certain weight. If I get there before I reach my "goal" weight I'll evaluate and decide if it's worth the effort to keep going.

You need to decide what you're comfortable with - like you said if you'd prefer small and petite and slim with curves.
