Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn's Diet

Anyone with cholesterol problems find success using this doctor's eating plan? It seems extreme with not even olive or coconut oil being allowed, but it appears his patients get good results. My husband's cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL keep getting higher (he's been in the high-risk category for several years) while his HDL keeps getting lower (now it's down to 30). His doctor recommended long ago that he start taking medication, but he's stubborn and thinks he can fix the problem himself (only to dig himself further in a hole).

I'm desperate to help my husband. Any advice is welcomed!

I've read his book as my mom has really high cholesterol and I don't want to go down that road. I am actually just following his recipes (plus those of Dr. Neil Barnard from the book "Get Healthy, Go Vegan").

I have a friend on MFP who has had good success with this approach.

I really believe that you can do it but even Dr. Esselstyn's patients/clients continued to use their meds until they were at least in a save zone.

Cooking without the oil takes a little to get used to (I've done it several times over the past years, but never stuck with it as I didn't have the motivation as I do now knowing how bad my mom's cholesterol really is!)

Anyway. Good luck to your husband.
