Hello, I'm 5'1 and about 196 pounds and need to be 146 to join the air force. And i only have until July to lose the weight. I'm very dedicated to get this done, but its sooooooooo hard!! I'm trying to cut out pop, 100%. I haven't had pop in 3 days and I already feel better. I work as a c.n.a at a nursing home, so I'm constantly walking and lifting all day. I also started the Jillian Michels, 30 day shed, dvd. I also want to get a gym membership and plan on working out 6 days a week, since that is what they do in basic training. Can I get some advice, tips, encouragement?? Really anything helps. Thank you!!

Best piece of advice I could give you is to beat every day. Take each day as it comes and make sure you exercise and eat sensibly. If you do that every day I'm sure your goal is more than achievable good luck!0

Welcome to MFP! And good luck on making weight to join the USAF!
I joined the USAF in July of 1991 (had to lose 20 lbs) and served until 1999. It was the best 8 years of my life.
But my advice: Run!
You're going to need to run in basic anyway - in San Antonio in July/August. You might as well start now.
I would run, do calisthenics (pushups, situps, pullups, etc) and cut calories.
50 lbs is definitely doable if you start now.
Plug in your numbers into MFP - shoot for 2 pounds a week or so - follow those limits with filling and nutritious foods.
Then move your walking into running soon - maybe do c25k to get started?0 -
I actually started my goals with the intention of joining the USAF Though I am 5'5 and needed to lose only 10 lbs to be 165, but I wanted to be in shape for basic. I've lost 29 lbs so far.
I started with my diet. 1200 calories a day. I started out by eating lean cusines and smart meals because I just didn't know how to eat. That helped me get my foot in the weight loss door, though I'm not sure I'd suggest it to everyone. Then I started focusing on cooking heathy meals, and cut out all TV dinners and junk. No processed stuff. Shop the corners of the store.
For basic you need to be able to run a 19:37 two mile (for my age group, 22-27, not sure if you fall into that) so I started running. I started with a mile a day, and my first mile was a 13 min. I slowly upped my speed and can now run an 8 min. Keep at it every day, and push yourself. Not too hard though, I did deal with shin splints and ended up taking a whole week off, that sucked. Once you can do a mile, slowly start working towards two miles. Add a lap here and there. Somedays I work on speed and some days I work on distance. Just keep pushing.
I also do ab workouts, sit ups. You need to be able to do so many for basic, and 17 push ups. So work on those if you want basic to be a breeze.
Finally, never give up. It may feel impossible some days, but others you'll impress even yourself.0 -

Wow. I could seriously have written this post 12yrs ago.
I was in the SAME situation. I needed to lose about 40-50lbs to get into the Air Force.
I worked out 4-5 days a week, mostly running. My recruiter had a meet up once a week where all the DEP'ers would go and run 2-3 miles. I made sure to attend that meet up every single week.
I cut out ALL sugars, fatty/greasy foods and brought in veggies, fruits and lean meats/proteins and nothing but water for drinking.
I lost the weight on time and was able to join up.
Make sure you run, run, run. You will be running a LOT in Boot Camp and San Antonio in July is very hot so run now, it will be easier when you get there {I was in Boot Camp from July/August}.
If you have any more questions about losing the weight for the AF, or even questions about the AF in general feel free to message me0 -

Thank you all for the advice and support, I realllly appreciate it. I'm just trying to not get overwhelmed with thinking about what food to eat and what workouts to do and whatnot. But, one day at a time!0
