Oh The Protein...

For some reason I seem to be going over my protein allowance. Not by much mind you, but seeing the red can be somewhat alarming. So how bad is it to go over on your protein?

MFP proteins are low. If you don't like red, adjust it to your body requirements.

i don't think going over is too bad...although i've read too much of anything can be bad for you. i'm trying to go over on my protein actually, so if i'm in the red, i don't mind. not sure if going over a little will hurt.

When I used to see a nutritionist, she wanted me eating like 80g of protein a day or something really high like that. MFP wants me to aim for around 60, so when I go over I don't worry too much. Protein is what keeps you full and keeps your metabolism going.

MFP is way low on protein Requirements. I actually recommend raising them especially if you want to tone up and keep some muscle mass on your body so when you do lose weight you don't end up having areas of the body that look like a deflated balloon.

I am encouraged to eat a lot of protein so I actually customize my settings so I don't see the red there so often. It has worked for me I rarely am hungry and haven't lost muscle mass which is dangerous when undergoing rapid wt loss.
It wasn't a big deal as I'm always way under my carbs so it wasn't a big deal to swap around my settings.
  • same here, i have a protein shake in the morning and there goes half my protein for the day, by the time the day is done i'm one and a half times over my protein.
  • protein is supposed to be 0.8g/kg of body weight, which is usually around 50-60g of protein. the problem with too much protein is it puts holes in your kidneys.

^^^ha. It puts wholes in your kidney. That's a new one. Probably if you are raking like 6-7grams per pound maybe!!!

.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight is a great target. For women .5-.7 is good.

@nilisabel: That 50-60 is low for many of the people on this site who have 50,60,100+ pounds to lose. For me, being 245lbs or 111.4kg, using your equation I should be eating 89 grams of protein a day, which is 23 more than MFP tells me. I DO think that your equation is great, and anyone who wants to customize their diet should use it!
  • it's not my equation, but thank you for the en pointe praise and criticism.

OK then, the equation you brought to the discussion. :)

i changed my protein allowance, because a little more isn't going to hurt.
i also changed my fiber level, which is way too low.

    good luck!
  • I would say just make sure to drink enough water when altering fiber and protein levels. Does anyone know where to find a discussion post about support systems in weight loss? I keep getting all this advice from friends about don't lose more than a pound a week and I'm eating at least 1200 calories and my body just loses more than that amount. Does anyone have a problem similar to mine or know which post to click on to find advice for dealing with stuff like that?

I probably go well over my protein every day and well under for carbs...that is just me. My body does however, seem to respond well to that. If I get all my carbs and am low on protein, I tend to add a few ounces on the scale. Everyone is different...

I'm usually over my protein also. I figure with the toning I'm trying to do it helps the muscles recoup so they aren't breaking down. I'm also seeing that I'm not as hungry between meals and snacks are not as neccessary. Like someone said, everyone is different. Now I DO need to drink more and trying very hard to do this. I was never one to drink much so feel like I'm floating with only 1/2 the water intake. LOL. Good luck.
