No time to work out! Help!

Need some ideas on what to do. I can't find the time to work out. Here is my situation: I am a mother of twin boys who are almost 2, I work full time at a desk job, my husband works full time and works longer hours. We both get up at 5am for work and I'm already not a morning person so waking up at 4am to work out just won't happen. I do walk 2 miles every day on my lunch. I get home at a decent hour but if I try to work out my boys crawl on me, over, want something or simply just want my attention. I've tried to get them involved in my work outs when I'm watching a dvd but they lose interest very quickly. I also don't want to add another hour away from them every day since I'm already away from them 10 hours a day. By the time the boys are in bed (after dinner, cleaning up the kitchen, making lunches for the next day, bath time, getting ready for bed) it's already 9pm and I'm just too exhausted to work out. I used to work out every day and be very fit before I had kids (and I had the time!). I'm looking to lose about 20 pounds and fit into my pre-baby jeans. Any suggestions?

You don't have to work out to lose weight. All you have to do is maintain a calorie deficit. Weight loss happens in the kitchen.

Of course you can still work out though, lol. For me, when my daughter was younger, I would take her to the gym with me and put her in the babysitting (The Y gives 1 hour of free babysitting). I got to work out for an hour and she got interaction with other kids. Otherwise, try working out after they've gone to bed. Maybe when they're older you can throw music on and you all can 'dance' together. Once it's warmer, put them in the stroller and go for a nice walk outside.... just a few ideas. Good luck!

Is there any way you can add some variety to your lunch walk? Perhaps get to a gym on M/W/F or do an exercise band routine at work?

Based on the scenario presented, the only thing I can see possible is changing it up during the times you do your 2 mile walk. Try increasing the miles you walk and the pace overtime while maintaining your calorie deficit. If you are able to add some form of resistance while walking (like weighted wristbands or something) then do that as well.

I hope this helps and best of luck to you.

25 and 30 min workouts..... everyone has that much time.....My lil boy works out with me.

    10 minute trainer too.

or try the 7 minute circuit if you don't want to buy a beachbody DVD set. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sportsdoc/App-of-the-Week-7-Minute-Workout-Challenge.html

or do Mike Chang's 1 minute workout

  • There's always time to work out, you just have to get creative, like while you are sitting at your desk move your feet as if walking or jogging in place, you can tighten and relax your stomach muscles, park farther away, use the stairs, take walks during your lunch time around the office, and play more with your kids, just get more creative. Hope this helps, if you think about it really, and I do mean really I'm sure you can find all kinds of free time out there.

Stay positive. You have already implemented some great starting points by recording what you eat and walking. Like the others say, switch it up. If you have an office (with a door) close it for 15 minutes and do planks, calf raises, sitting chairs, barbells or band exercises.
It will take time to see progress but it will come. Check out links for great office workout ideas.

Just make sure you bring a small pack of baby wipes.

    Best of luck
