Struggling to gain core strength

Hello all! I'm new to MFP, and this is my first thread.
I'm not really overweight, but I do have a few extra pounds to lose before I'm at my ideal weight. While I work to lose these pounds, my big goal is to increase core strength and get abs. I've done my research and found a number of ab exercises that are supposed to be the most effective, but the problem is, I'm not strong enough to do them. I know that ab exercises are not effective unless you do them right, and my core is so weak, I can barely do them in the first place. It's a vicious cycle. Any advice?

What exercises are you talking about. You need to look at exercises with modifications. You are better off doing less reps with good form rather than lots with bad form.
I think a lot of the combat stuff is good for abs. DVDs such as Tae Bo, Turbojam/ Turbofire/ Les Mills Combat and Hip Hop abs are all good.0 -
What kind of exercises are they?
What CAN you do? There's so many options, you should be able to find a modification for some. Could also look up belly dancing, great for abs.
I'm also playing with a few apps...Ab Trainer X has 6 minutes of 'beginner' abs, maybe you could do that?0 -
Also, yoga!0

ab challenge! I found one on pintrest. I was a beginner and the first day was something like 15 sit ups, 5 crunches, 5 leg raises and a 10 sec plank. It steadily goes up each day. I feel a total difference in my abs and amazed myself at how many situps and how long of a plank I can do. Definitely helped me.0

I'm also struggling with core strength for years. I can't even do a single sit up as I really can't lift my upper body. I've been doing several ab exercises such as crunches, planks, leg lifts, etc. but it seems it's never enough. Or maybe it really isn't enough?0
