I am going on an alternative route this afternoon and I need to log how many miles I am running. What do you recommend for an android app?

    I'd say MapMyFitness/Run/Walk, Nike+ or Runtastic.

Zombies, Run! also tracks your route with the gps on your phone and when you log in online, shows the path you took, distance you walked/jogged, gives you your average mph, and how many calories you burned. I love it!

    Mapmyrun
    Digifit
    Runkeeper

All work fine on androids. If you want to pair a heart rate monitor (HRM) with them, there is a fee that varies from app to app. The differences in user interface and capabilities are minimal on the free versions. I personally use Digifit paired with a HRM and have it synced with my fitbit and myfitnesspal. I put on the tunes, turn on the app, enable voice feedback and go. No need to look at a watch to check my pace and at the end of a run I have a good view of where I truly exerted myself and where I cruised.
