Non Dairy/Meat food ideas?

Recently saw the documentary Forks Over Knives and it has inspired me to cut down a bit on dairy... I already don't eat much meat, just the occasional sushi and chicken at restaurants.
Any ideas for protein/plant-based foods that are easy and cheap? Nuts don't really do it for me, they're great but they don't fill me at all, and I already eat beans/oats fairly often.

Feel free to check out my diary for ideas. I don't eat any dairy, although I do eat gluten and humanely-raised chicken, beef, fish, eggs, and other animal products.
I've recently gotten into quinoa. It can be included in many savory dishes, but I like mine for breakfast or a snack. I make it with almond milk, stir in some almond butter, and top with banana slices.
Soy products tend to be pretty high in protein, although too much generally isn't good for you. I like extra-firm/firm tofu and/or edamame in a stir fry. Trader Joe's extra-firm sprouted tofu is my favorite. I made a fried rice dish a few days ago with this tofu, edamame, an egg, and brown rice. Soy yogurt and milk are also decent for protein. I generally opt for almond milk because it's lower calorie, but I've decided to go back to soy yogurt for extra protein.
Non-dairy ice cream is pretty nutritionally void, so I make my own with a banana & nut butter base. We have an ice cream maker, but you can also stick a frozen banana with the nut butter in a food processor. Add chocolate chips and/or chopped nuts, and maybe a bit of almond milk, and it's delicious!0 -
feel free to check my food logs.
I eat fish and eggs but no other animal products.0 -
Thanks! I've heard the banana ice cream thing is delicious.
I'll put quinoa and tofu on my lists.0 -

I see you eat coconut yogurt. I'll have to look for that. That's one reason I'm hesitant to give up dairy...I eat a TON of yogurt and I can't easily find a yogurt substitute that's affordable/not full of sugar. I've heard soy yogurt is decent too.0 -
Yes! I'm thrilled for your dietary changes. I recommend that you watch the documentary Meet Your Meat and also documentaries about genetically modified foods- all of which is on YouTube. It's one thing being vegetarian. It's another when you have a strong foundation for your choice by knowing what REALLY happens in today's food production...
Anywho, I've been veg since July 2013 (I used to be vegetarian for a year and a half and switched to pescetarianism). Check out the website

Many recipes and things to know about living a vegan/vegetarian (aka veg*n) lifestyle.
As another comment mentioned, Quinoa is great! SO nutrient dense with 8g of complete protein per serving! Peas (4), unpopped popcorn (4, and also one of my fav low calorie food), protein-rich wheat/health-food breads (7), (for me i stick to organic when it comes to soy products) edamame (complete, 8), soo many variety of beans(14), (organic) tofu.. the list goes on. So much information you can find on the web, hun. Don't just subsist on nuts because you need a variety of nutrients from a variety of sources (even as a meat eater!) ESPECIALLY Vitamin B12 (only attainable through animal sources), Calcium and Iron. Some may argue that don't need vitamin/pills/supplements, but as mostly vegan vegetarian, I take a few. Doesn't hurt (:0 -
Try chia seeds, they make a great pudding! Decent protein too.
I saw Forks Over Knives too, so now I only eat locally grown, grass-fed, on-the-same-farm-it's-entire-life cows.0
