Had monitor gone nuts?

I got a Polar hr monitor as a New Years gift. It was giving me reasonable results for running like 442 cal for 4.2 miles (hills) and reasonable heart rate. Today I wore it strength training. Yes, I worked very hard, but 790 cal in 1:20? It was showing me crazy numbers, like heart rate over 220. I don't know if this is even possible? I'm fit but 126lb. I can't be burning that much.

My understanding (someone correct me if I'm wrong) is that HRMs aren't accurate for things like strength training. They're really meant for cardio only. If it was some kind of circuit where you kept moving between sets then I think it could be accurate, but if you were resting more than a very short time in-between I probably wouldn't rely on it.

You worked out for almost 90 minutes. If you're truly pushing yourself then yes you probably burned that many calories.

Well, it was kind of circuit training that utilized weights and included some bursts of cardio and body weight (pull ups, push ups, etc). Varied and faced paced, but 3 reps of each set eventually.

My Polar would do that when it was around something that caused interference, like a large tv or high tension power lines.
