How do I keep GAINING wieght??

I just don't understand how I keep gaining weight! I workout every morning Mon - Fri, anything from Zumba to Sweatin to the Oldies to P90X. I usually eat over my calorie goat but no more than 200 to 300 per day and I'm only on a 1200 calorie a day goal anyways, so the most I eat in a day is 1600. I've been going strong for two weeks and I've gained 3 pounds?! How is this possible??

You've picked up a new exercise routine recently for the last 2 weeks?

It's water retention. Muscles retain a lot of water while they repair themselves. Everything is fine.

I just started again in the last two weeks, I fell off the wagon for the last four months.

Just keep at it, the water retention will go away. It is not physically possible for you to have gained 3lbs of fat unless you are lying to yourself about your calorie intake in the last 2 weeks and have eaten 10,500 calories above your maintenance needs.

I just read on your profile that you had your thyroid removed. Have you asked your doctor? Do you see an endocrinologist? I would think that could certainly have something to do with not being able to lose weight.

    Yep, b/c science...

OP, might I also suggest increasing your calorie goal a bit since you say you're going over it anyway? I don't know what your current weight is, but it's likely you should be able to lose weight eating more than 1200 calories.

I never thought about seeing a specialist about it, thanks for the tip.

I am in a similar situation. I am not exercising, but that was factored in my daily calorie intake recommendation. I am eating even less than that but not able to shake off any weight for past 10 days. In fact, one day it looked like I was down a couple pounds, and then I gained them the very next day. Any advice?

My advice is to not look at daily fluctuations. Look at the overall trend of weight loss. Ten days is hardly a plateau. Once it becomes 3 weeks or more, then it's time to revisit your food diary.

I'd agree with this. I would say that qualifies as a legitimate medical condition which may put you outside of the statistical norms that these calculators use to determine calorie goals, etc. It may also have some impact on the kind of foods you can eat and possibly foods you should avoid.

It is true that you retain water in your muscles with a new workout routine, so there is that aspect as well.

Do you weigh your food? Also, you can probably go over 1200 with all the exercise you're doing. You're supposed to eat back at least some exercise calories.
