Eating Out Confession!

Hey Pals,
So I was having a great week, been cooking a lot more and drinking water and working out. I noticed that my stomach has been deflating, I'm assuming because of the reduction in carbs and starches from the fast food I normally ate. However, this weekend really has been discouraged because I have been invited to many places with friends and people have bought me food and tonight I really over did it. I had a salad, but it was loaded with a bunch of goodies, so it was high in calories and to top it off I wanted the ice cream and cookie skillet from chili's - again loads of cals. So now, I have a stomach ache and feel bad because I was doing good this week and was excited to weigh in on Tuesday.
I just started my ticker over on New Years and I don't want a lot a people knowing I'm trying to lose weight, which is why I never ask them to only bring half of the portion out and box up the other half. I don't want the questions.
I'm just a little frustrated...I guess I'll squeeze a workout in tomorrow (on my rest day) and try and drink plenty of water to try and flush some of this out my system...
But, just some advice on what to get when eating out with friends or when your boss buys you lunch. I don't want to be rude, but I don't think I can eat out with people for a while!

Unfortunately, sometimes there isn't a way out of going out to eat. A few days ago I had to go out to eat with my friends who wanted Chipotle. I love Chipotle, but it has a lot of sodium. I got a bowl without rice and just got veggies, beans and cheese. Although it wasn't too many calories, it made me bloated again. And I'm still bloated, and I've been "back on track." It's so awesome to see our stomachs deflate
I think that as long as you keep on jumping on the bandwagon, you should be fine.
And we don't want to isolate ourselves from friends and family by refusing to go out to eat.0 -

oh goddd ^ haha but like the other person said, sometimes there's not always a way out. sometimes i try to look at the menu beforehand so i have a good idea of the kind of cals/carbs/etc. also don't worry about people 'noticing,' because if you're at a restaurant i'm sure there's a lot more going on. in the past i've purposely eaten slower so people finish before me (take drinks of water betwen bites, chew slower, etc), and just asked for the leftovers to be boxed that way they don't have to wait around for me to finish. no one really thought twice about it. it's totally okay to have a great time with your friends, so try not to worry too much about calories or what people may think0

My advice for the 'going out with friends' is to order the lowest calorie thing I can find (if I know I'm going out ahead of time and where, I'll check the website for nutrition info), if it's something I know I should only eat half of, I eat half and then box the rest. I don't do the box ahead of time thing, because I've always felt that was silly. I try to avoid dessert, and that just boils down to willpower. I mean, you can make better choices for yourself without drawing attention to said choices. I've found the less I stress myself out over things, the easier it is to make the right decisions. Water is also your friend, but it seems like you already know that.0

One of my work friends had her birthday dinner at a pub! Luckily they had the menu online so I could have a look and see what I felt like. I ended up wih the Fisherman's Basket which was entirely fried but it was exactly what I felt like. I had a small piece of birthday cake and one lime and soda as well. I asked the waitress if they could grill my fish instead but no dice. Even the best laid plans don't quite work out.
I try and focus on enjoying the meal and the experience especially if it's someone's birthday. I'll also make it my big meal of the day if I'm going somewhere where I know I won't be able to resist ordering anything naughty. Hello Mexican food! However, If it's just a "meet for lunch" type occasion then I'll order something light and try to make the best choice I can. Can I have veggies instead of chips? Can my meal be grilled instead of fried? Can I order a half serve? Can I split this with a friend? etc.

Agreed with everyone who checks out the menu beforehand and makes a plan. It may be helpful before you go out to eat to write down what your goals are - commit to selecting something healthy, only eating a half portion or focusing on friends and conversation instead of the food. That way you've put it out into the universe and you're more likely to stick to it!
Last night I went out for Cuban food (one of my faves!) with friends at a restaurant where the portions are HUGE. I went over the menu at home and did a little research on what the healthiest options would be, and when my food was brought out I cut everything in half and promised myself I would eat slowly, focus on the conversation and have at least half my meal left to box up at the end. It worked! This was the first time in a loooong time I was able to do this - my biggest problem is with portion control, and I personally would feel a little embarrassed asking for the server to only bring out half the meal and box up the rest. That said, I'm still a pound heavier today and feel a little bloated. At first I was upset, but even though I'm on a diet I'm still allowed to have a social life, and dining out is a huge part of that. I'm proud of myself for making the best decisions possible and not overeating. These are the types of long term lifestyle changes I should be making, so someday when I'm not on a "diet" anymore I don't gain all the weight back.
Finally, if you didn't make the healthiest choices, that's ok. It's just one meal and today is a new day! Don't starve yourself or do some insane workout to overcompensate - just go back to your healthy habits and move forward.0
