I started using this system on Jan 17th. After a few weeks, the scale finally showed the fruits of my labor. However, I went to a superbowl party, and gained 7 lbs in two days! That really set me back mentally. Does anyone else experience this type of major weight gain overnight?

You are retaining water from all those salty foods. You probably have some of it sitting in your bowels, as well.

As long as you get back on track the next day, your weight will get back on track, as well.

You really can't gain 7lbs of fat in just 2 days (well maybe you could, but that's A LOT of calories). Like the person above me said, you probably ate too much sodium and so get back on track and start eating healthy and your goal calories again. Also, it helps to drink water (I drink about 2 liters a day) and do some hard workouts and sweat. At Christmas the scale said I was 5lbs heavier and in a day or two it was back to normal. Don't get discouraged, one day will not ruin all your hard work!

Another good thing to note is that if you're female, many of us ladies gain 5+lbs the week before our TOM. It goes away sometime during your cycle. :)

Yes I did, probably due to water retention because of sodium in the food, binge eating yesterday:laugh: , my weight was up by 4 pounds. You can weigh -in again after two days, empty stomach , first thing in the morning after you wake up...

I'm having the same issue right now....but I'm not letting it bother me. Getting on that treadmill today and doing my normal work out and counting my calories. I consumed VERY large quantities of wine Friday night/Saturday morning. Woke up completely hungover and sick as a dog Saturday, and still felt kind of crummy yesterday.I have drank tons of water so I know my body is holding onto it after being such an idiot over the weekend. I ate normal yesterday and didn't count calories but tried to behave by not eating crap as I didn't eat at all on Saturday. Got on the scale this morning and I was up 3 pounds. It will go away....just give it time.

The scales told me I have gained 5lbs since Friday... I hate the scales today and feel really crappy

Flossie, I just looked at your diary...and there's no way you gained 5 pounds in anything but water over the weekend. It'll come off, give it a few days. I use my tape measure...especially on days when the scale doesn't move or moves in the wrong direction.

Hello, I just started back on myfitnesspal program. Based on my past experience, I think it does take a while to get the weight off in the beginning. I am mostly eating even fewer calories than recommended but somehow, just seem to be gaining weight.. I would think that would be water retention, but why does my body retain that much water? I drink no more than 3-4 cups of water each day. Any ideas?

I think the problem is you eating too few calories. If you submit your food diary at the end of the day (online or on the app) there's a warning if you're below 1200 calories. You can put your body into starvation mode, which will actually make you GAIN weight instead of losing it.

As for water, you'll only get water weight if your diet is really high in sodium. You should never drink as few as 3 cups of water in a day, regardless of whether or not you're trying to lose weight. Water is really important for the body.

    1) drink more to flush the extra sodium
    2) it's normal to gain water weight if you eat too much
    3) don't make the mistake of eating too little to lose too fast... it will be much harder to stick to and you'll have way more set backs.

Thanks. I will watch my sodium intake. Any ideas on how to boost metabolism?

    Hi,

I have been on this program since Jan 1st (I know, how predictable) and am really watching what I eat but the weight is doing a serious yo-yo. Yesterday morning, the scale showed I was two pounds down and this morning, I am two pounds over. Please look at my food diary. Even if I am underestimating my calories/sodium consumed, how could I be gaining weight. Even after drastically changing my eating habits, I have not lost any weight in 10 days. Any advice?

    Hi,

Even though my scale is not showing any improvement, I am sticking to my reduced calorie diet. I have increased my water intake and am hoping that will help. I am not exercising at all but am generally an active person who works full time, has two kids and is on her own. Any advice on how to boost metabolism?
