Purification Program

My husband and I are doing the Standard Process Purification program. It is a 21 day cleanse. I am continuing to log in mfp to keep on track. I am under my calorie goal each day and will be adding exercise back in this week. We are losing weight due to the nature of the cleanse but wondering if eating a calorie deficit is going to be bad in the long run when we go back to our post purification eating plan which is set to loose 2 pounds per week. Any insight?

    Brace yourself...

Cleanses don't work. What "toxins" are you cleaning out?

Cleanses are not normally supported around here.

if the cleanse is working for them or something they want to do to jump start their weight loss, why knock it....... sometimes we need a cleanse... you may try to study up on all the TOXINS that are actually built up in your intestines....... and a good cleanse of those intestines and your system once in while is not always a BAD thing....... just saying....... btw,,, ive never cleansed LOL i used something once called super colon cleanse,,,,,,,,,,, but i needed to poop..... and that sure helped me poop.
a cleanse sometimes helps you lose the cravings or the addictions to carbs, sugars, stuff you dont need......

Ditch the cleanse and use MFP as intended. But no, you will be fine to eat at a deficit although depending on how much you have to lose, you may not need your caloric goals set for 2lbs/week.

I have recently weened off of some medication and decided to do the cleanse to help my system reset. I've done it once before to help with inflammation that I was not able to get rid of regardless of diet changes. I had a lot of success with it. I had been on an antidepressant for 5 years and it caused a huge weight gain. No matter what i did in regard to exercise and eating clean I continued to gain. Since I am finally off of it my focus now is getting the weight off thus my concern about the calorie deficit

If there are toxins building up, then you should go to the doctor because your liver and kidneys are having problems.

Would you please link to scientific studies about these toxins? Not blogs, docs, or magazine articles, but actual science? Because every time these things come up, no one can seem to produce any.

you are not a computer. you don't have to reset anything.

You don't need to cleanse because the body does it for you without outside help. There are ZERO toxins that build up in the body. Pooping is cleansing your intestines. That's all you need.

Now, there's nothing wrong cutting out processed foods for a while. You may feel better doing that, but you don't have to cleanse.

i guess this beats purification by fire unless that's phase 2..

and system reset? huh? doesnt that mean you'd have to completely shut down your organs (ie die) and then use a defibrillator or something to bring you back?

sorry but i'm honestly not understanding the science behind the human system purification idea.

You are losing weight due to the caloric deficit - that IS the "nature" of most cleanses....

If you are currently consuming less calories than the recommended 2lbs per week, chances are good that you will gain weight after the "purification process"....That is also the nature of cleanses....

If the caloric deficit of your cleanse is big, you will also lose muscle mass, which will make it ever harder to lose weight after the cleanse....

I just want to point out that the people telling you not to do it have either been here a while or they have lost a nice amount of weight. The one person telling you that it's a good idea and that cleanses work or that we need to detox is new and has lost a small amount of weight. Not attacking her, just saying that many of us have tried pills and cleanses in the past with no success (usually gained more) so we understand that they do not work. Stick to MFP's methods.

Thanks for answering my questions and not judging my choices. Just curious how you would define a "big" deficit

In general, cleanses seem to promise a large weight loss and make you think you are cleaning something bad out of you. However your body should be doing that for you pretty much every day (mine happens after coffee). As far as the sudden weight loss: been there, done that, no t-shirts were handed out. Gained it back. Got real, used MFP and am on the way to the goal now.

My response was in reference to this quote. I appreciate your input usmcmp. Don't know why others have to be so aggressive with their opinions. My question was not referencing peoples personal opinions of what my choices are.

Taking what I can from your profile Your body needs roughly 1800 calories to sustain function if you were laying in bed all day (brain activity, breathing, pumping blood, etc.). With some light normal activity (walking, eating, cooking) your body burns around 2400 calories a day. So, if you are eating 1400 calories that is pretty low. My suggestion is to eat 1800 and make sure you are active during the day.

5'10, 248, and 43. I guess I'm mainly looking at the amount I am below my daily goal

I always find myself thinking that any program that requires the taking of supplements is, on it's face, unhealthy. If it was healthy, you wouldn't require supplements to follow it.

My guesses were right. You burn approximately 1850 if you were to lay in bed all day. You burn about 2600 with normal light activity (takes some energy to move extra weight). If you were to eat 1850 calories you could easily lose almost 2 pounds a week. I've been doing this for almost 4 years now and it is much better to eat that much. You'll have energy, you won't feel hungry all the time and you'll be able to stick to it for much longer than eating 1400 calories.

Thanks for your help. You've got me a little confused now though. mfp has my daily goal to loose 2 pounds a week based on my entries at 1280. I double checked in settings and that was based on sedentary. I am a stay at home mom so I changed it to lightly active and it bumped it up to 1580. When I add in exercise I just want to make sure I eat those calories correct?

MFP doesn't take a lot of things into consideration. You put in data and it computes a number based on that. There are reasons you don't want to eat that little. I started out at 217 pounds (I'm 5'9" and a female). MFP set me to 1200 calories. I could stick to it Monday through Friday, but by the weekend I was starving. I'd eat tons of food on the weekend and basically ruin my progress. When I started learning about the energy equation in our body I increased my calories to 1800 and finally started actually losing fat. It was much easier to stick to the higher calorie number, plus I felt great instead of weak like I had been.
