Sodium vs. Water

In my short time here on MFP, I've learned a lot of things about food and nutrition that I didn't know. It's also cleared up a serious misconception I had about water weight. I had always been under the impression that if you ate a lot of sodium-rich foods, you SHOULDN'T drink water because all the sodium would absorb it and cause water weight.

Please feel free to laugh.

Now that I know how it really works- you drink A LOT of water to flush the sodium out- a question has popped up in my mind. It's entirely possible there isn't an answer, but I figured I'd ask.

Is there any kind of ratio of water to sodium? For instance, if I take in 1000g of sodium, is there a set amount of water that will flush that out?

Like I said, I totally get that there might not be an answer, but a lot of you guys are really knowledgeable, and I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks.

Lol! Ok, done laughing! Seriously I have found that if I drink 3 or more bottles of water a day I do not see the bad fluctuations on the scale so less water retention. Good Luck!

You don't want to flush ALL the sodium out. You need electrolytes (like sodium) for your body to function. People who die from drinking too much water (yes, you can) often do so because their electrolyte balance is too low. But you need to be drinking gallons in a short time for that.

Just make sure you are adequately hydrated (pee is clear/light yellow) and don't worry about it.
