Whey or Casein

I'm not sure whether I should be having a whey or casein protein shake so I need advice. I workout in the evenings after my daughter is in bed and normally have a whey protein shake. I have limited myself to 1600 calories. My ultimate goal is to shed 10lbs (29y, 142lbs, 5'6) and tone up my entire body after having a baby. My question is should I be drinking whey or casein in the evenings before bed? And should I have a shake in the morning as well.

    whey absorbs faster, but really if you get enough protein it wont really make a difference. I know people that take whey after workout and casein before bed, but not sure it makes much difference at all.

    That said Casein tends to bake better and much better to make protein fluff out of (search the forms for protein fluff if interested, mmm)

    Really the only difference that I know of is that casein protein takes a lot longer for your body to digest than whey. So I would recommend it if you are finding yourself wanting a midnight snack as it would leave you feeling full for longer.

  • Thanks both for the advice...Casein it is because I am normally STARVING and looking for another snack which is my problem.
  • The best time to drink whey protein is first thing in the morning or before your workout. Whey protein is the most rapidly assimilated protein supplement, and for this reason is best to take after you have been fasting all night or just before you are going to put your body through a lot of hard work.

    Casein is the best protein to have either after your workout or in the evening before you go to bed. Casein is a good quality protein, like whey, however the rate at which it is assimilated is much slower than whey. This is not a bad thing! What it means is that while you are sleeping (therefore fasting) your body is able to repair your muscles efficiently, and you are able to continue the fat-burning process. :smile:
  • You have a point! Natural cottage cheese is just as good as casein :) However, numerous studies have been done that show whey protein is the most rapidly assimilated protein- and it helps for fat loss when it replaces other calories in the diet.

    Try drinking a glass of water when you find yourself looking for a snack, the body can confuse thirst for hunger, and they say it only takes a 1% loss in hydration for your body to start feeling thirsty.
  • I definitely do eat a lot of greek yogurt and cottage cheese as well. Should I do a whey shake in the morning as well as a meal replacement even though I'm not working out? Lately I've been having a bowl of oatmeal. I stare at a computer all day long at work and my only exercise until later is walking the halls at work.

    If you're looking for something filling, opt for high-protein foods instead of a shake.

    I actually make my post workout shakes out of a mix of the two. 1/2 Whey and 1/2 Casein. You get the quick absorption from the whey, and longer term protein supply from the casein.

    There are also of lot of powders that are already a blend of whey and casein. I use the Gaspari MyFusion Elite Protein Series for this.

    Oh man...

    Assuming you're netting sufficient protein, the difference between whey and casein from the standpoint of body recomposition is going to be negligible.

    In other words, use whatever is preferable in terms of taste and cost.

    Edit: BigMech, just so you are aware, Gaspari and a number of other companies have been subject to criticism of late regarding the use of "filler" ingredients, i.e., additives. The inclusion of nitrogenated compounds can skew protein measurements, i.e. single amino acids. Look for ingredients like taurine and glycine being listed immediately after "whey isolate, whey concentrate, etc" as your 25 grams per scoop may be as low as 18. While this isn't a problem for everyone, someone aiming to be more precise with their macronutritional intake would be robbing themselves of a fair amount of protein assuming frequent daily use.

    I like them both -so I keep them both in my home.

    Whey is digested faster and so I will have it immediately after a workout for that benefit. Casein is slower, so I will have it if I know I won't be eating for a few hours b/c it keeps me fuller. Or I will have it before bed so that my muscles are fed overnight and I'm burning more fat while I sleep.

    I like mixing whey with greek yogurt for making "ice cream" and other treats. However Casein is easier to cook with, and it seems to make consistencies thicker. So I will put casein in my "healthy pancakes" but I would never put it in my yogurt.

    Even assuming we accept the dubious statement that milk protein extracts are not natural your post is demonstrably false. Whey powder has fantastic bio-availability, better than all or most whole foods, as well as a fantastic amino acid profile.
