I gain A LOT of weight whenever I exercise...?

I've ALWAYS noticed that whenever I exercise regularly I weigh a lot more... I've started working out really hard for a few weeks now. I've been exercising at least an hour a day. I do really intense circuit training twice a week. I do yoga once a week. I do the treadmill and free weights the other days. I've also cut out some things (although I admit not that much, my diet still needs work) but I am eating LESS calories. After a few weeks of this I finally weigh myself...... GAINED 13 POUNDS!!! And please don't comment that it's muscle... because it's not. None of my clothes fit. I feel awful. I'm sore everyday all day and I'm starving all the time no matter what I eat. I really think I should just give up... Why does this happen to me every single time I do healthy things???

    Are you logging religiously? like every single thing and accurate quantities? because excercising that much can defintiely stimulate appetite, and it's possible that if you have worked out hard you'll allow yourself and extra treat or handful of somethign, or full fat drink, and not be counting the calories.

    that could defintiley have an impact. You could also (if it's a big change in your rotuine) be retaining water - have you been watching your salt intake?

    Basically it's very unlikely that you are a complete freak of nature and that exercising somehow makes you fat while it helps everyone else on the planet to lose weight. It's far more likely that somehow you're overestimating the amount of calories you burn and therefore eating more than you think you are, or possibly retaining water which is not real weight.

    resolve to be more accurate logging - do a week to test it if you want and just be completely rigid ... and see if that makes a difference

    You need to weigh your food and log everyday. You have no idea how much you are eating but you need to be at a deficit to lose.
    Perhaps you are overdoing a bit with the exercise.
    Open your diary so people can advise you.

    ETA with that much exercise make sure you are drinking LOTS of water.

    do you weight/measure all your food?

    do you log every single calorie?

    how many calories per day are you consuming?
  • I average 1,300-1,500 calories a day. I do log what I eat, even if it's not good and there's not many days where I'm over my recommended calories. Not sure how to open diary. I have a lot of fruit/veggie allergies... so for the past couple weeks I've been eating fruits/veggies instead of other things and I have to take benadryl several times a day so I don't get hives, etc so that makes it extra awful..

    No, I don't weigh my food. I actually don't have a kitchen right now... (long story) so most of my food is prepared...... like Subway almost everyday or prepackaged salads, etc so that is easy to "measure" I guess. I do log it all in (even if I get dressings, etc).

    You can't out-exercise a bad diet and it doesn't sound like you're logging anything. If you are, please open your diary so we can help you better.

    do you have a food scale, weigh/measure everything?

    Are you actually tracking your calories, weighing your food etc. If you're gaining weight then you're exceeding your cal intake. You can out eat any exercise program.

    You do retain water from exercising but 13lbs is a lot.

    You may be eating less calories but if it's not *enough* less then you're still eating too much. I used to eat 3500+ a day (guess), MFP/TDEE tells me I need approx 1800 to lose weight. If I eat "less than I was" and reduce it to to 2500, I'm still eating too much and won't lose/might still gain. This is why it is so important to have a very accurate record of your intake rather than guessing which it sounds like you are doing a lot of.

    Some of the 13 pounds is probably muscle/water retention if you just started exercising like you are now, but not all of it. Do you eat back your exercise calories? MFP grossly overestimates calories burned, so if you're eating it all back, your net calories could be considerably higher than you think.

    Depends how much you weigh now.

    If you weigh 250 + pounds/female and you just started doing bootcamp/weight lifting, you will put on weight at first.

    Your muscles being sore is because you're overworked and it's repairing itself. Your muscles will hoard a lot of water.

    Most of that 13 lbs is water weight.

    You will see better results if you start off slow and build up your strength and fitness level , along with diet.

    Rome wasn't built in a day. Just because you exercise rigorously for 1 month and eat less than you usually do, you won't lose weight.

    The people in biggest loser can lose weight that way because they literally eat - calories... and most of them gain it all back immediately after the show. It's a sham.

    My first question would be why are you eating foods that you are allergic to and then taking Benadryl to avoid a reaction. If your body can't tolerate a certain type of food, don't force it. You can eat very healthy and not consume foods that your body can't tolerate. Part of the weight gain might also have to do with your body's allergic reaction to the foods. The hives are an outward reaction, but you could really be doing damage to yourself internally.

    I agree with the others, weigh/measure everything. Also, if you are eating out a lot and eating prepackaged meals, you are getting a ton of sodium. Water retention is a definite possibility.
  • Make sure you are weighing yourself first thing in the morning with minimal clothing on and before you eat or drink anything. It's amazing how much clothes actually weigh. Also, you need to pay close attention to the quality of the calories you are eating. By that I mean you need to be eating foods with high quality calories such as lean protein (chicken, fish, etc) and slow -digesting carbs (brown-rice, sweet potatoes) and a decent amount of veggies and fruit. You can eat some fat but make sure it is quality fats like those from nuts and fish. It doesn't matter if you only eat 1500 calories a day if those calories are poor quality. You should also pay attention to your Calorie Breakdown which can be seen on the pie graph in the myfitnesspal mobile app. If you're eating a lot of carbs and not enough protein, you are most likely going to gain weight. You probably need to up your protein intake. Studies have shown that by upping protein intake and decreasing carbs, it increases weight loss. I'm not saying start eating protein like a bodybuilder or swear off carbs, just make sure you are balancing them well.

    I eat things I'm allergic to and take benadryl because I'm allergic to most healthy foods... The only thing I can eat without taking allergy medicine is bread, meat, and sugar. So I'm trying to be good and realize I need to eat more than just that. I've replaced most carbs with veggies so I have to take benadryl.

    Prepared meals like Subway and premade salads do not have a ton of sodium (deli meat would be the thing with the most sodium).

    Thank you for all responses though. Some of you have made me feel better about it already.... like I need to just keep trying.
  • You just answered your own question. Most prepared foods, especially lunch meat (the Subway you eat EVERY DAY) is LOADED with salt. You have turned yourself into a waterbed mattress, which weighs alot and is bad for your heart and blood pressure. Limit salt to 2000mg/day and your skinny self will magically appear after several trips to the bathroom to pee it out. Get your kitchen up and running because it will be impossible to limit salt if you eat out every day. Restaurants want their food to taste good, thus the salt and fat. Also, be honest about how much dressing and goodies you are putting on your salads. Try logging your salad as it's individual components instead of generic "mixed salad". I can easilly take a healthy salad and turn it into 1000 calories! Good luck Bob RN CCRN-CSC

    You are overtraining and possibly undereating, take more rest and re evaluate your diet and workout.

    Although i wholeheartedly agree that the quality of the food you eat can make a massive amount of difference to how you feel at lower calorie intakes - i feel obligated to point out that the above quote is rubbish. My absolute lowest weight (i had/am recovering from eating problems so this is in no way a recommendation to actually try this, just a point of experience) was achieved by eating 3 packets pf crisps a day with three green apples, for months on end. meaning 50% of my intake was pure rubbish.

    Eating poor quality calories and still eating less than you burn will not stop you losing weight - however, salt will meake you retain water and that can make you look and feel very bloated. As others have mentioned it's very likely that take out type meals will contain more salt than the same prepared from scratch.

    The biggest thing that strikes me odd is your allergies - to healthy food, IE: all healthy food?

    Have you been to the doctor, have you had full allergy panel done - I have ALOT of allergies, but I still eat alot of veggies, just avoiding the few that I really can't take.

    If you are truly allergic to as many things as you claim, you will need to STOP eating them and find other healthy alternatives. Eating things that you are allergic will cause system wide inflammation and possibly other medical issues. This alone could be WHY you have gained instead of dropped (if logging correctly) inflammation w/ can your tissues to with hold ALOT of water.

    I recommend seeing a doctor to get your allergies checked.

    Plus as many of the others recommend, log everything correctly. Even if you eat out somewhere, alot of fast food places have online information about their food thus you should be able to add things as needed.

    Ahem. Guys, it's a 13 lb gain in a couple of weeks. That's not from overestimating calories - at least the bulk of it isn't. The most logical explanation is water retention.

    Are you aware that one of the potential, but infrequent, side effects of Benadryl is severe water retention? To the point where the retention can be visible?

    Let's assume you're not wildly off on the calorie estimation. I will about guarantee you that you are experiencing that side effect. Don't eat things you're allergic to, and stop taking the Benedryl. Water should gradually drop off in a week or so.
