Logging on vacay...yay or nay

Going on a hot holiday to an all inclusive resort. I have worked really hard logging and exercising and close to my ideal...really just to the point of toning up a bit. When I go on vacay I don't log. I make some healthy choices, never eat to feel stuffed...just satisfied. And, of course, there are the drinks (rum punch and mojitos are my vice..lol). So, I was curious what others do? Thanks!

I'm going to thailand and other places for 2 weeks with my male friends.

I just quick-added 6kcal/day every single day lol food + alcohol.

No need to count. I don't expect to 'lose' fat during this trip no matter how much I walk. I might lose some muscle mass + gain fat.

    Do I care? no.

I know I can return to my diet + exercise habit afterwards to shed all of it.

Gotta live life. You diet to look good and feel good about yourself, not to be a slave to your diet.

Make good choices and make use of the resort gym.

If it doesn't have one, make good choices and make use of the resort pool.

If it doesn't have one, make good choices and make use of the sea.

If there's no sea, I go mad with bodyweight exercises and general aerobics in the hotel room.

I try to walk everywhere when on holiday.

Generally, I start the day with exercise and - though I'm not much of a drinker any more - drink slow and never drink to get drunk. 2-3 drinks are fine for me.

Ya, I know that. But I know a week of not worrying about it will take me a week or maybe a bit more to lose. I actually do this silly thing where I weigh myself the morning I leave, log my weight and then realize the next time I get on the scale it will be 5-10 pounds more. I weigh myself when I get home, shrug it off, own the number and start logging. Usually loose at least half of the gain in the first few days (water retention) and the rest us just some dedication.

Never go to the resort gym...I walk a lot and go snorkelling and scuba diving. That burns a lot of cals.

I've taken the time to log. I recognize that the count may under estimate just because it may be food that is far richer than what I might normally eat or be able to report with some certainty.
  • This is actually a good post question

I am leaving in 2 weeks (YAY!!) for a sunny vacation.

I will not be logging at all. I wont even think about it.

But I am not trying to lose weight exactly, I am trying to change my body composition. For me the calorie counting isn't a big thing. I am just trying to be more aware of what I am eating.

It also depends on what type of vacation. All inclusive out of the country, or camping I wouldn't be logging since I wouldn't be connected to the internet.

Going to visit relatives or see a new city. then I might

If I have internet access, I'd log, because I'm still in the beginning of my journey. If I didn't have access, I'd make notes of what I'm consuming (it takes all of 5-10 minutes) so I can enter it when I get back.

For me it's not a short-time process, I'm working on making changes to keep for life.

Average person will gain 10LBS on vacation. I am referring to cruises where food is all-you-can-eat pretty much 24X7. Historically I've gained more when I got off the cruise ship. The most important thing is to resume your normal, healthy eating habits and exercise as soon as you are back. Of course if there are physical activities at the resort, I would pack workout clothes to minimize the damage. :)

I say nay - it's a holiday. It's only a week. Stress less and just have a good time. Worry about it when you get back.

Hope you have a great time!

I log from my phone. If I have wifi / cheap 3G, it's pretty much a given. I've always found five minutes to spare while visiting family on an extended basis, but we haven't gone on a real vacation since I've been logging religiously (about 8 months). If you're really busy having so much fun or don't have the access, I'd say let life happen, though :)

I am finding this superinteresting. I won't be logging because I know I will gain a bit of weigh and I know I will loose it, I never log at an all inclusive. We always go to resorts where you can eat at the al a cartes each night of the week. Typically I will select an appy or dessert and a main course. There are always lower cal or healthier vegetarion options that I will have a few times (just to mix it up).I also find at the all inclusives we go to, they have the portion control way more in check - meals are properly sized and not heaping off the plates.

I wouldn't go to a resort that didn't have a pool or the sea. That sounds like a plain old hotel to me.

When I am on vacation, I sometimes log, but I don't hold myself to it. So I may log breakfast and lunch, but skip dinner, or I may not log for the day at all.

I do remain aware of how much I eat and hold myself to reasonable portion/meal sizes.

I never have and I've vacationed a lot over the years and it's never been a problem, actually I usually lose weight but then again I'm not one for all inclusive vacations. If you generally gain a lot of weight when on vacation and your worried about it and if you feel the need to control your eating then do that.

Vacation is your time to get away from the world and its' worries. I do not even turn on my phone or go anywhere near the internet at all when I'm on vacation. Just focus on enjoying myself and having a good time.

That being said, I will usually run on the beach early in the morning and also we do a lot of SCUBA diving and swimming which does burn quite a few calories. Our last vacation, a cruise) I did a TRX class which was fun.

    Have a great time! :drinker:

Usually nay. Depends on the vacation. But I like good food - good food in good restaurants. Not your average chain restaurants with all the nutritionals neatly posted online. So since all my food would just be wild guesses anyway I usually don't log. Just try not to go too crazy.

I cheat and log my vitamins every day so I don't lose my # of days though. Except when I was on a cruise - couldn't log in at all.

I also try and walk a lot, do active things, or hit the gym - either hotel gym or if the have an LA Fitness in the area we might drop in.

Back from my vacay. I logged on travel days and once I landed in Jamaica the first thing I enjoyed was a non logged rum punch...lol. I weighed myself right before I left and as soon as I got home. When I got home at midnight I was 9 pounds up. By the next morning I weighed again and I was down. A few days later and all has balanced out and I am 2 pounds up from my pre vacay weight. I am right back on track and I expect that by Friday I will be down to my pre vacay weight. My goal for the next month is to hit the weights hard. We will be going for our second hot holiday one month from today with a big group and I want the bikinis to look even better than it did a week ago.

I always was pretty healthy at breakfast (cannot have the greasy fried foods in the hot hot sun or I will feel soooo icky) then I would eat 3 more snack meals throughout the day. And then dinner. I drank alcohol enough, but always had water between drinks. And, I scuba dove quite a bit (with a lot of currents). What amazes me is how much people eat, though. Especially at the buffets (breakfast/lunch). I think by logging Daily I really came in tune with what I eat, so when I didn't log I didn't go crazy off track.

I knew when I left I would own the number when I got home and laugh it off when I got on the scale and then buckle down and conquer it. Good luck to those of you going on holidays this winter!!

I keep track on a small note pad I take with me, but unless I had easy access to the internet, I wouldn't bother logging it until I got back.

When on vacation, I end up eating out more often. There's no way to know what exactly is in a meal cooked in a shack on the east coast of Oahu owned by a husband and wife who don't even have a website, let alone nutritional facts on their Japanese/Polynesian fusion menu items. I try to choose sensibly, but if I'm going to go on vacation, it's a complete vacation. One week won't kill me.

I don't always have access to internet on the trips I go on, so no logging. However if I have easy internet access, I will still try to log as best I can. Spent a week in Florida snorkeling and diving earlier this month and managed to lose while I was away.

Nope, not logging on vacation. I just make good choices; and don't worry about the occasional "no so good choice." I usually end up unintentionally exercising a whole lot on vacations (walking, site-seeing), that I don't gain/lose weight.

I always log in on Vacay just to see the damage done. If it gets too bad you can muster some self will and pull back on the rum punches.

Just as I don't stop brushing my teeth, or washing my hair, because they are part of a permanent lifestyle and not a passing thing..... I also log the food I eat while on vacation........maybe I log over my normal limit, but I do log.....:o)

eff that. vacations a vacation. as much as i admired the dedication that people jumping rope outside the bar and eating lettuce from the buffet displayed, i was like RELAX. ITS VACATION. especially if you're drinking, sweating, drinking more, eating, frolicking on the beach.. just enjoy the vacay =]

if you're going to log it might be harder especially with not knowing the calorie count of resort and foreign restaurant food. i might or might not still log, but it would deter me from enjoying myself to the fullest extent. could be good could be bad depending how you view it. even if you log, and go over [which you likely will] just move on. then make sure to get back on track when you get back. =]

i think the young lady who said no actual work while on vacation is pretty spot on. i'd just relax.

    my $0.02

^^Definitely this. Part of my routine. So I think when I don't have internet access I'll probably stick with making notes for myself, even without the calorie info I think it will help me recognize what I'm eating. But if I'm over, I'll be over and own it, because it is vacation. Goal for vacations for me is always maintenance-ish calories anyway.

Yes I logged everything on vacation. I also worked out 7 out of the 8 days we were in Florida. I lost weight on vacation. I cooked a lot at the condo.

I don't log because I know it isn't going to be anywhere near accurate anyway. I'm not making my own food or eating at chain restaurants so who the heck knows what the calories actually are?! I just try and do my best and make sure I get a lot of activity in.
