Butt and Thighs

Okay, so I'm going back to it. I do know that squats are great for toning my butt and thighs. My question is this: I don't want them to get all muscular and big. So, how do I work it out without that strange bulge I get on the side of my thighs? (I'm sure other ladies know of the 'bulge' that sticks out) Trying to slim it up.
Thanks in advance.

Squats, deadlifts, lunges, hill sprints, good mornings, and a calories deficit.
You won't gain muscle on a deficit. If you think you are, it's just temporary swelling that will go away after a few weeks when your body acclimates to lifting weights. It's impossible for a woman to gain significant muscle on a deficit unless they're using steroids.0 -
Saddlebags? Or that weird muscle that shows up after a while? I used to show mine off "Hey! Look at this weird/cool thing!"0

Your quad muscles? Personally I like mine.0

Or you can do deadlifts instead.
But honestly quads own, on ladies too.0 -

I am sorry. i do not mean to be rude. But there is no such thing as ugly muscle (except perhaps those ridiculously huge, steroid-use-inspired, body-builder muscles).
If your legs get muscular, they will look better, not worse. Even the "bulge" is probably cute.
You have allowed someone to sell you this misconception that strong women are not attractive. But, it is a misconception.
You should perhaps google "body dysmorphic disorder," because this borders on that.
Meant with the best of intentions.
Go on now. SQUAT and have fun with it!0 -
If you really want to target the glute muscle without hitting your quads much then weighted hip thrust are the answer.

You still will not gain much (if any) muscle while dieting though.
"toning" your thighs and butt is all about losing body fat and retaining your muscle. There is no exercise that will target fat loss in one area so there really is no such thing as a toning exercise.0 -
OK, thanks y'all for replying so quickly! It's just a part I don't particularly like -especially when I attempt to wear skinny jeans. Still plan on moving along!!
