Using a HRM while lifting?

I have a polar ft4. Ive read that it isn't meant to be used during weight lifting. What should i do if i was weight training and then doing cardio after. Should i start the calorie burn counter before or after i lift?

i also want to know this! I have a ft40 too and have NO idea how to use it. Do you "pause" it immediately when you're done your workout? (ie. right after you finish running?eliptical? etc) or do you leave it for like say 2 minutes till your HR slows down?
What about classes like body pump? where you're doing cardio/weights?

ps: my name is also daphne!!! :D:D:D

I have been doing body pump for over 2 years...great class!!! I always do 20-30 min of cardio before every class and I always leave my HRM on from the start of cardio to the end of pump. I burn anywhere from 400-550 cal from cardio thru pump (usually 200-250 in cardio, rest pump). Body pump is a very active form of weight lifting, so I think it's accurate. If you are doing stationary weight lifting that does not include cardio at all, it is likely not accurate.

Depends why you are wearing heart monitor. If to assure you don't over exert during rapid reps/sets fine. To measure calories.......not accurate

HRM calorie burn calculations are based on fairly steady effort. They greatly overestimate burn from activity like weight lifting where the pulse is mostly normal and spikes very high for a few seconds out of every few minutes.

But rather than working with a timer I wear mine while lifting and start the next set when my heart rate drops back toward normal.
