Is Sugar screwing with my weight loss?

I've been on a pretty restricted diet for my IBS but I'm also on it to lose weight. So far my IBS has gotten worlds better (woo!) and I'm learning my trigger foods. I've had some good weight loss so I shouldn't even be writing this post, but I need to get back on track and the past two days the scale has very slowly been edging back up.

I have 100lbs to lose and my goal for this summer is to lose 50lbs. I've already lost 11 or so of that and it's been pretty quick in falling off.

My question is do you think my weight loss stall (and minor gain) is just water weight, natural fluctuations, etc or do you think eating a bit too much fruit is causing it?

My calorie goals per day are 1400 but I don't freak out of I go over by a bit, typically I am under though. My sugars per day are set at 60grams, the past three days I have gone over my sugar BUT only by eating fruit. I do not eat any other forms of sugar at all, just fruit. It's not like I"m sitting here chowing down on fruit all day either, I usually will have a banana, some berries and maybe some cantalope. I'm going to be limiting my fruit to see if it changes anything but I have to say I am really disappointed because having some fruit is the highlight of my fricking day. I think my body is just really sensitive to sugars of any kind?

no you just need to eat less overall.. or create a bigger energy deficit
  • If you are within your calorie goal for the day then I personally wouldn't cut fruit out - especially if you enjoy it.

Our bodies fluctuate on a daily basis. So, I suggest that you weigh yourself just once a week - not everyday. I also recommend that you measure your self with a tape measure every couple of weeks. The scale can go up or down daily depending on the food we have in our digestive system, and also how much water we are retaining, so sometimes it isn't a true reflector of fat loss - and it can be quite demotivating.

So, don't put all of your faith in the scale. Try using other methods to assess your progress.

Be patient! Don't stress over it, and good luck!

It could be water weight or natural fluctuations. Weight loss is not linear, and most people see a loss, small gain, bigger loss, small gain along the way. As long as you're seeing a downward trend over time, you're fine.

Open up your diary, please, if you want this type of advice.

Chances are, if you are gaining weight you are eating too much. You might be underestimating food calories, especially if you don't weight and measure all food and log everything you put in your mouth, including those incidental snacks or licking off the spoon when you bake (yummy! ), or even that bite of cookie. You might be overestimating calories burned because the gym machine, MFP, and Iphone pedometer apps are way overestimated. Yep. probably some miscalculations going on, which is pretty standard.

Remember, too, that weight naturally fluctuates.

Weight loss isn't linear........check going forward, and if you contine to gain weight, your eating too much food, so you might want to revisit how you measure that.

It may just be natural fluctuation, or you could be really sensitive to sugars. Experimenting with how much fruit you eat--and what kinds--sounds like a good idea.

I had the same concern when I began MFP a year and a half ago... as I understand it, the natural sugar found in fruit is not a concern because you are consuming it along with the fruit's natural fibre. Hence I eat as much fruit as I like, but avoid fruit juice since the juice doesn't offer the same fibre benefits.

I think of weight loss as a bit of a bouncing ball. Often after reaching a new low, the scale boings up for me... And sometimes there isn't much action for a week or two and then I get a whoosh of weight loss. I wouldn't take a daily scale reading as proof of whether or not a weight loss program was working, I'd look for a series of readings trending down over time.

Good Luck, sounds like you're doing everything right!

I know you're right! I think I just needed to hear it LOL. It's so nice to see the scale go down down down that I think I've become a bit addicted to it. I'm going to force myself NOT to check for another week. It's great to see it go down but probably not worth the worry when it plateaus. And that reminds me, where the heck did I put my measuring tape... I keep meaning to find it and start counting inches.

I'm glad I made this post, it has really encouraged me to stop weighing myself every day. I knew I had to stop but it's addicting to watch the numbers drop.

If I weigh myself next week and there is a gain then I can start worrying.

I fear that I might be very sensitive to sugars, even if they are from fruit. :(

I'm of two minds when it comes to this, on one hand I would like to just continue eating fruit and weigh myself in a week and see what my progress is but on the other hand I would like to continue monitoring my weight daily to see if fruit does have a direct effect on my loss.

Not sure what I will do yet but I will definitely give myself a few days break from weighing.

Thanks guys. It's nice to have a place to talk about this stuff.

Thank you for your thoughtful post. Congrats on your weight loss, wow! Very inspirational.

I'm definitely happy with my weight loss so far, I just genuinely think I may be sensitive to sugars even in fruit. I'll just keep monitoring and see how it goes. I'm definitely not ready to give up fruit! It's such a nice treat.

MFP and your other devices (like heart rate monitors) need to be adjusted when you loose weight to stay accurate. MFP also but I think they remind you (or used to) and say you've lost Xlbs you should adjust your goals. You can very easily see if you need to change your calories by going to apps and checking your bmr again based on your current weight. If it's off by a lot, update your mfp settings. The other thing is eating below your body's needs by too much or eating same calories everyday can cause body to slowdown. You can try staggering your calories so long as your weekly totals match the cumulative daily goals. I know the android app has this option to see daily and weekly goals and totals.

Also, don't weigh and log your weight daily or you will miss the forest for the trees. I get on the scale in the morning but I only log weight once a week or once every two weeks. I only use the scale as a guide to how I'm feeling. Sometimes I feel heavy when I'm really not or maybe it's just water weight or I got slipped something with grains/gluten and I'm holding water for healing.
