I found out that I was Celiac two months ago and have been doing great so far. But there comes a point where you want to know that there are others out there also wanting to lose weight, but are also dealing with the gluten free issues as well.

I feel the best i've felt in years!!

I'm gluten intolerant! And it makes me eat less bad carbs! That's pretty much the only blessing lol

I'm not nearly as strict with my restriction as you would be with Celiac, I don't eat bread or pasta (unless it's gluten free) & I do try to avoid things that have gluten in the first few items on nutrition labels, but I don't seem to have any problems with trace amounts so my food choices are actually pretty good.
  • I do not have Celiac's, but I am gluten free, my body does not respond to wheat well and I don't think it is good for you anway. It's actually quite easy, you just have to read a lot of labels! :)

My 3 year old son is Celiac so we are all gluten free here! Add me for support or if you need some tips! :)
  • I was diagnosed with Celiac exactly 7 years ago. I am losing and doing great with the gluten free diet, but I always have. I have bad dreams about eating bread and cake!! Good luck to everyone who is dealing with this opportunity for better health. 8,m going to plug Udi's GF products - they are great. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about living GF!

  • Hello! I am allergic to wheat, corn, soy, peanuts, fish/seafood, and milk; however, I am not Celiac and I can drink milk because it is only a "Class 1" allergy for me. My doctor says that I can only have 2 pieces of toasted white bread a day if I have to have bread. Most of the time, I don't even eat that. I have found it hard to find gluten free food products unless I go to a health food store and that can be very costly.

It runs in my family. I was diagnosed as Celiac about 11 years ago. I was also diagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis two weeks ago and now avoid soy as well. There are tons of message boards regarding celiac disease and some good sites you can sign up for through facebook.

We thought that I had Hashimoto's and was being tested for that when the Celiac came up!

To whomever wrote about Udi's above, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE! Udi's is the best thing to happen to our house. Expensive but worth it. My son ate his first sandwich on Udi's bread and I cried! We're in Canada and its difficult to find Udi's here, we drive 2 hours and spend almost 9 dollars per loaf of bread. It is worth it though!

    Allison-
Its important to note that although having one doesn't imply that you will have the other...celiac and hashimoto's is not uncommon to overlap because they are both autoimmune diseases. Some celiacs go their entire lives without further problems, while others may develop other autoimmune problems as time goes on. Everyone is different so you just want to be aware that this is not uncommon and you want to be aware of the possibility of this occurring in the future. My father has two autoimmune conditions (one being celiac), I have three, and my 15 year old nephew, so far, only has celiac disease. So no alarm...but be sure that you are in the care of a specialist(s) have an awareness of this.

Thanks for the insight! I have a great doctor who listens to me and my symptoms. I probably would still be feeling horrible and feeling like I was crazy because no one knew what was going on with me. I'm so thankful to know and also that I don't have to take a pill to cure it!

    Food is my cure!

I have abused food so much in my past, coming from having a bingeing disorder. But learning that i am celiac has actually given me a great respect for food. And I feel better today than I have since my freshman year of college (6 years ago)

I wish I could get my friend Amanda on here! She is allergic to gluten and thinks her Celiac disease means she will never lose weight (she's 5' and over 200 lbs). If she knew what an awesome support system she would have on here, I know she would do well!

You are all totally inspiring because you are overcoming your condition and are dedicated to being healthy! Keep it up!

    Hi everyone,
I just joined today, and I have celiac disease.
I also have Hashimoto's and Epstein Barr.
It's nice to know that I'm not alone with this.
I do think that these conditions have directly impacted my weight, my health, and my relationship with food.

I know I'm bringing up an older topic but I'm hoping someone can just tell me...I had blood drawn to test for Celiacs last week, how long does it usually take for this test to come back? I'm getting a little anxious waiting...

I don't know if I'm a Celiac or not. I do know that I cannot function if I'm eating wheat. After just a small amount, I'm a write-off for a couple of days!

My naturopath told me I had to cut gluten and dairy out of my diet for 6 months to see if I got better. I was off work for three weeks in July and felt awful. All I wanted to do was sleep. I had blood tests for all sorts of things, even resorting to all the Hepatitis's and HIV, all of which came back negative. There was antibodies for Glandular Fever, but since I had that in 1990, my doctor thought it was from that. I am also very anemic, and I'm having trouble getting my iron counts back up - I'm going to get a shot in the butt I think....

Anyway, I had to stay on the diet for 6 months to see if it worked, and after two weeks, I knew. I knew it was the right thing for me. I have more energy now than I have had for years... The anemia can be attributed to being a celiac too, so that would make sense.

My problem is that to be tested, I need to start eating wheat again to get the anti-bodies in my system for the test, and I'm not prepared to do that. I don't want to feel that way again.

Has anyone else been through something similar?

I am doing something quite similar to you. I had a blood test for celiac, which was negative. However, my daughter, granddaughter and two grandsons have celiac disease.

I had allergy testing which showed that I had a high intolerance to dairy, eggs and gluten. I've been eliminating these for the last 6 months. A few times I've inadvertently had milk or milk products and this certainly has caused me problems. I am going to try to reintroduce gluten in a bit. I tried eggs awhile ago and they made me stuffed up.

I hope eventually to add perhaps gluten or eggs back in limited quanities. In the meantime I feel so much better eliminating these food groups even if it means my food choices are limited.

I do well though. I just came back from a 3 week vacation, including a 1 week cruise. At times it was challenging finding the right foods, but I did it!! And besides that , I lost .5 lbs. A success in my mind.
