Too much sodium

Today I went over my sodium quota without adding salt to my meals. I'm trying hard to keep it down but its difficult, anything processed contains too much.

Example - water pak tuna 450
lite salad dressing 310
2% cheddar cheese 150

Finding good food that is not processed is key for me to keep sodium down.

My training told me to stay under 1500 that 2500 is too much if your trying to lose weight.

What do you eat you that's low in sodium?

Your trainer would hate me then. I hit 2500 or more every day, typically.

Why is this sodium limit specific to weight loss? Aside from temporary water retention or medical issues that could require careful monitoring of it, there's nothing wrong with it. I've lost all my weight without really paying much mind to it. All you need to lose weight is a calorie deficit.

My trainer realizes that sodium is contained in almost everything we eat. Egg whites, milk, whatever. Her theory is my weight loss will be affected by water retention when I weight in. I do drink plenty of water and I do notice my rings are too tight when I've had to much in my diet. My goal is to find other foods low in sodium that I can add to my food list. I'm much older and take medication for high blood pressure so any additional tools\food to help me along is what I need.

If you kept to your normal sodium intake on a daily basis it wouldn't have an effect on subsequent weigh ins. It would have an effect if the day before weigh in you consumed a vastly different amount of sodium that you usually do.
  • If you're trying to fill calories, go with avocados. A single medium hass avocado has 250 calories and only 10mg of sodium. Fruits are good as well, but they contain lots of sugar.

Buy no-salt-added or low-sodium options of packaged foods (like water-packed no-salt-added tuna) and prepare food at home when possible (such as using oil and vinegar instead of a prepared dressing). However, sodium restriction isn't necessary for weight loss.

Do you have borderline hypertension or Actual hypertension? If not then don't worry about it or eat a bit more potassium to balance it out
