What Are Some Substitutions For Weights ?

I have a set of 2, 3 and 5lbs dumbells that I got my mom (and I use them more than she does -_-). But instead of a medicine ball, using my mom's 16.9lbs bowling ball. BOY it really makes a difference. Why use 17lbs of sand / pellets, when you can use 17lbs of cement / concrete ?

What are some of YOUR favorite makeshift equipment ?

I use milk/water jugs filled with sand. The ones with the screw on cap! And then I'll put them inside a back pack for extra resistance doing elevated push ups or long slow paced jogs. I do mostly body weight exercises so they come in handy when I need to add some resistance.

I use cans, lol! I hate doing arm work outs, plus I am not sure how much you are allowed to lift while pregnant, so I swing cans around while I do cardio.

I do this too. And I lift my German Shepherd (68 lbs). She thinks its funny.

I've got a pretty embarrassing setup happening. I've just started trying to lift some weights this month, so I haven't bit the bullet and bought the real deal yet.

I've been using a 24pack of bottled water (@25lbs) and taping my little 20 lbs of dumbells to the top to get 45 lbs.
Tonight, I put it all in a box and added a bucket of plaster and some more water bottles for about 60 lbs
I am also using my daughter as a weight by having her sit on an ottoman and lifting one side of it.

Might be time for a real weight set :blushing:

Aww! Shepherds are my favorite dogs. And they are MUCH better weights than a dachshund, which is my 2nd fave dog and what I have now. Her 12 lbs does me no good!

I've used a 5 litre bottle of water and then wet sand for Turkish get-ups, bags of sand in a rucksack for weighted squats, lifted the dog (Golden Retriever) for front squats - handy if you do a lot of rambling with the dog and you need him/her to get used to being carries over gates etc.

I use just bodyweight most of the time and find an exercise that is just within my strength range. Bodyweight calisthenics is no more limited than weigh-lifting if you study it well.

edit: just to add, you can also use resistance bands to help reduce your own bodyweight in some exercises like pull-ups and chin-ups, by throwing a sling over the pull-up bar and dropping your foot or knee into it to take off some resistance.
