edited February 12 in Fitness and Exercise
I started the couch to 5K program in mid/late September, and made it through week 5... then I slacked off (yeah, I finished the hardest week and then gave up). By the time I got my motivation back, it had gotten COLD. So a few weeks ago, I agreed with myself to get going, cold or not. I decided I would run if it was above 20 degrees have I have been doing well. Unfortunately, it's now been below 10 (most nights are below 0 and I was running at night). I really need to do some exercise but I have no idea what else to do...going to a gym is not an option (I can't afford the $50 a month for the only one in town).

Any suggestions for staying active when it's this cold?

I agree its like -46 with the windshield in MN today. I was really shocked that the schools were open this morning and not late. The more urban schools were closed or late today but we live way up north. I think by the end of winter we all will grow polar bear skin. :)Or definently will grow a real appreciation for spring once that rolls around. I have been doing alot of weightlifting and indoor fitness DVDS though. If you have the netflix dvd service you can sometimes get some good fitness dvds from there to try at home then if you like them you can buy them on amazon. Or sometimes you can even order some good ones from the library and try them at home and then buy them on amazon later if you like them.

It's never too cold if you dress for it. I've been running outside all winter. I've never been forced indoors because of the cold yet. Ice, that's a different story. Not sure what you have for a budget but here are some ideas on how to dress:

However, if you feel that is too cold. There are plenty of free workout videos on YouTube. You can walk the local Mall or possibly even find an indoor track you can use (if you're near a university or something).

there are all sorts of workout videos that are great for at home and a lot of them are on youtube so you can get them for free on there; Jillian Michaels is pretty good, there is a lady that has and indoor "walking off the pounds" program but I don't know her name off the top of my head, or try some zumba or something fun like that.

Walk the mall...do anything, there are so many indoor options to keep moving. Might not be able to run in the mall or a store but you can walk fast and its better than not doing anything.

Is a treadmill out of the question?

Unfortunately, yes. Even if I could afford it right now, we don't have the space to put one.

And my nearest mall is a 45 minute drive so that's not really an option either :( I have been debating ordering Shaun T's Focus T-25, I could do that at home! Thanks for the opinons!

Jillian Michaels videos are effective and inexpensive. Try My favorite.. Ripped in 30. You can get it on line or at Target.

Running up stairs is a good one for at home. jumping rope as well. Anything really that gets your heart pumping.

I would love to try running outside as well. I don't have cold though, I have snow, snow and more snow. Drifts are already above your head and we haven't even had any new snow in over 2 weeks. Plus ice underneath all that snow.

Most gyms allow guests to use their facilities for a 5 or 10 dollar visit. On the days where its too cold, that may be a more affordable option then signing up for a gym membership. You may only have to do that a handful of times in the winter.

I used to smoke, so the uber-cold air hurts for me to breathe while running. long story short, I can't go outside and play until the sun comes out, again. :(

I buy work out videos off of half.com. circuit training, so I bust a good sweat and my muscles stay strong. *flexes* rawr. ;)

but, yeah. this whole "winter" thing really cuts into my running time. :\

    Never too cold.....Lulz.

It was -17 when I went to the gym this morning, wind chill around -50, it's supposed to be colder on Monday.

My friend just sent me a walking video and its a really good workout - you don't need equipment - you walk 2 miles and it gets your heart rate up and it has alot of belly and core moves. I love Shaun T - but you can get some really good alternatives that's not as expensive.

For what you are going to spend on T25, you are better off buying some Under Armor, Nike, Rebook, Asics, (whatever brand floats your boat) cold running gear and go outside. The temps don't move me inside but the ice does. As long as there is no ice on the sidewalks/roads I'm running outside.
