Eat more and exercise more?

Can we eat as much as we like but then exercise more to burn it off? Or should we just eat less and then not do as much exercise?
Had a few days where i have ate quite a bit but then made up on burning those extra calories at the gym.
At the moment i am keeping my net calories below 1200.

Net below 1200? As a male?
You're clearly eating too much. Good thing you did all that extra exercise to make up for it.0 -
1,200? Very low. But yes I think eating and exercising more is the way forward.0

I think it depends on whether or not your body can handle it. I know I will add a little cardio into my day if I think I'm going to be way over.
That being said, people often overestimate their calorie burns and underestimate their consumption, and netting 1200 is too low for you. I'm a 129 lb female and I burn 2100-2200 calories per day.
It's a lot of work for most to burn 500 calories, so if you're trying to burn off a Sonic shake or something (where a small is 750 calories easy), you're probably going to fail. Better to just not eat the shake.0 -
1200 calories is the bare minimum recommended for women - you should not be eating that low.
Set your goals realistically with MFP. You doIn't have that much to lose, so you should set your weekly loss goal to no more than 1 lb a week. The goal MFP gives you will have a deficit built in already - meaning you can eat all those cals, do zero exercise and still lose. If you exercise, eat back at least a portion of those cals - your net cals should be at or near goal every day.
As far as eating as much as you like and then burning it off with exercise - to a certain extent, yes. But if you're always eating more food than you need and then having to go go work extra hard to burn it off, you may eventually run into problems. Better to eat the proper amount of cals for your stats and activity level, and do reasonable exercise for fitness, not just to burn off a huge meal. Of course being able to eat more because you're active is a perk, and I love cheeseburger days for sure, but they fit into my daily goals, not just because I went gonzo with a workout that day.
Does that make sense?0 -

I don't like the phrase "eat as much as we like". Without some description of what you like to eat, it's impossible to say if you can eat that much.
You must keep a calorie deficit to lose weight. Whether you create that deficit through burning more (exercise) or consuming less, you still must have the deficit. It's also important not to burn out or cause injury by over-training just so you can eat more.
1200 is very low for a man. The general recommendation for men is to not eat less than 1500 net.0 -

under 1200 really...wow..I eat more than you and I am a woman...eat some food.
you could easily eat 1800 calories with no exercise and still lose weight...
To lose weight you need to be in a "reasonable" calorie deficet how you get there is your choice.
But if you are only eating 1200 net don't exercise please you might pass out from last of fuel. Seriously...0 -
Nooooo i am eating more than 1200 but the net after taking away calories burnt is under 12000

1200 net is too low for most men.0 -
Uhhh sort of.
If you're Michael Phelps and you're eating and burning off 10k calories a day that's fine, but for a regular person to attempt that every day, just because they want to eat that much, would be bordering on an eating disorder.0 -

Sounds like a plan for failure and burnout.0
