Just got one in my area, what do you buy at Whole Foods?

I generally stick to the bulk foods and produce section. The deli is insanely expensive.

I don't know if this is the case in the United States, but in Canada, the deli doesn't have nutritional information available. I went there last week and it was a logging nightmare! I got a salad and then ended up pulling it a part to weigh all of the different components and was shocked to find it worked out to be 800 calories if I ate the whole thing!

If you're budget conscious, their 365 brand is often cheaper than the average grocery store. I shop exclusively at whole foods, and don't feel the least bit bad about spending slightly more for quality. They'll also sample you a single product under $10 just to try out, and you can return anything you don't like with or without a receipt. Love whole foods.. Fun just to browse the aisles and discover new things to try.

    I regularly buy:
    - bulk: org. Almonds, quinoa, oatmeal, oat bran, and most spices
    - frozen: blueberries, edamame, cherries, greens etc
    - body care: silk floss, toms toothpaste, acure shampoo etc
    - specialty: ipa's, bulk olives
    - grocery: 365 canned pumpkin for desserts, 365 sardines, flax tortilla chips, salsa etc
    - produce: they always have a great selection of greens, peppers, ginger, avocados galore, sprouts for salads, onions, sweet potatoes etc

If you don't shop carefully, it can end up being Whole Paycheck.

We have a Whole Foods in our town. I buy:

    -organic nitrite free bacon
    -Mary's organic chicken
    -kefir and yogurt
    -365 brand products
    -apples, blueberries, pears

Personally, I prefer Trader Joe's, but Whole Foods is much closer to our home.

I regularly buy rye flour and other types of specialty flours. If the regular grocery has them they are cheaper there.

Bean sprouts--the only place I have found that has them. I also buy the seeds to sprout but usually don't sprout them in time to use them so have to go get them.

Kale--I don't often find this in the regular grocery.

Dehydrated refried beans, in bulk--my son lives off these in a burrito.

Fresh ground peanut butter--it is yummy on a spoon or with honey in a sandwich.

Their veggie section is usually reasonably priced and ours has the best selection in town. For example, they usually have like 4 different types of kale and I've found brussel's sprouts on the stalk there before as well (which were awesome). Their deli bacon is pretty legit. Meat can be pricy but I've always been pleased with the quality. I've purchased numerous lamb roasts that turned out fantastic and their steaks (while pricy) have always been solid. The hot bar is my go-to dinner when I'm feeling lazy.

Friendship no salt added cottage cheese! I live off the stuff. 90 calories and 16 grams of protein per half cup with minimal salt.

I have to go to Whole Foods at least once a week for:

    - Wallaby greek yogurt, my favorite, and it's the only place I can find it.
    - Cello-shaved parmesan cheese. I could shave my own, but I wouldn't, so I pay them to do it for me :)
    - Bulk unpopped white popcorn - best I've found anywhere especially in terms of the number of kernels that actually pop, so it winds up being cheaper than regular grocery store brands
    - Coffee. I forget what it's called, but the medium roast whole bean in the green can - delicious.
    - Prepackaged chicken curry salads. Some of the other salads like the Sonoma Chicken and Albacore Tuna taste great, but are really high calorie.
    - Occasional sushi
    - Frozen chicken nuggets. Again, I forget the brand, but it's a blue box, probably organic. Delicious.
    - I get it very rarely, but their pepper bacon is amazing.

The olive bar usually has some great selections.
I usually pick up a few frozen meals too. They have a really good selection.

And then any time I'm going to really cook a good meal (as opposed to quick and easy basics), I usually get the protein from whole foods. Their seafood and meat counters are just ridiculously good. I had no idea how different chicken could taste :)
