To pill or not to pill?

My girlfriend started taking Adipex and she has lost nearly 12 pounds in about 2 weeks. My insurance kicks in next month and I am thinking about starting off on Adipex but I wanted to see what everyone's opinion was.

My question is, are there really benefits to taking diet pills?

It seems a bit shady since you should be able to lose weight by eating less and working out more.

Has anyone taken Adipex, or knows someone who has?

Did they keep the weight off, grow a third arm, any other crazy side effects?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

That is exactly how weight loss works.. The diet pills are just you paying to follow the instructions.. what do most of those say.. works with a balanced diet and exercise.. why waste your money..

The 12 lbs she lost.. all water weight.

Weight loss is calories in vs calories out. Those magical pills are a waste of money and to be honest most of them is just caffein which you can get from a coffee at a much lesser price.

There is no magical pill, the magic happens in the kitchen and at the gym
  • I already started a low calorie diet and start going to the gym tonight so I think I should be fine. Thanks for the advice/tips.

Most prescription weight loss pills do work, in that they severely suppress your appetite (I believe they generally work by suppressing your CNS). However, there are a ton of nasty side effects and they usually make you feel pretty awful. I'd suggest doing some research and seeing if the risks for that particular pill are worth it.

Honestly, you don't need the pills. Plus, you'll feel better about yourself once you meet your goals on your own.

ETA: These are the drug's listed side effects: Dizziness, dry mouth, difficulty sleeping, irritability, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: fast/irregular/pounding heartbeat, mental/mood changes (e.g., agitation, uncontrolled anger, hallucinations, nervousness), uncontrolled muscle movements, change in sexual ability/interest.
