I'm just new to using the my fitness pal iphone app and I'm unsure how to log a food that's not on the data base and the calories are unknown when I'm in a restaurant for my dinner like I will be tonight any help would be appreciated

If I'm in a pinch, I find something else similar to what I'm eating from another restaurant. If not, I'll track down the nutritional information on-line and add it to the database myself. You can only do that on the actual webpage, not the apps. You can add food just for your use on the apps, though.
  • Thanks for the advice I'm going out for tea tonight and was totally panicking

If there's still time, see if they post their menu on-line and figure out what you're going to have ahead of time. That makes dining out much easier when I do it.

On the Iphone app you can add foods and recipes. I do it quite a bit, I find the info I need to add a food on line on my computer then add it on the app so I don't have to flip back and forth on the computer screen. I do most of my recipe building on the phone app because I can have it right beside me in the kitchen as I am cooking.

To add a food on the Iphone app, start in the diary, hit the + to add food - a list of foods you have recently added will show, scroll to the very bottom and there is a button that says "create new food" that will take you to the screens to add your own food item.

To add a new recipe on the Iphone app, start in the daiary, hit the +, choose the recipe tab, scroll to the bottom and there is a button that says "create new recipe".

To edit your foods and recipes - go to settings, My Foods and Exercises, My Foods or My Meals then choose what you need to adjust.

If the restaurant website does not have nutrition info. for you, you may find info. on calorieking.com and can add the numbers to MFP. Otherwise, I will typically make a mental or phone note of what I had and how much and update MFP later.
