Have heard that it is best to eat within 15-20mins after exercise to maximise fat burning/increase metabolism.....is this the case? What do folks advise? Thanks ????

I haven't seen any research supporting that claim (doesn't mean there isn't any; I'm not an expert). Endurance athletes are often advised to consume carbohydrates with a bit of protein (lowfat chocolate milk actually has a very good balance) as a recovery meal within 30 minutes of exercising, but the point isn't to maximize fat burning but to speed up glycogen restoration and muscular recovery.

This abstract summarizes some relatively recent research into exercise and the timing of food intake:

All I know is, from personal experience, is not to eat right before a workout. I wanted to throw up during HIIT when I did that.. and I generally eat dinner when the sun is still up :) its a habit i picked up from my mom, she told me its healthier.. but if you live in a cold place that gets dark early that may be hard...

It might have some truth to it but it probably applies more to athletes with specific requirements. There're so many rules people try to tell you and they can have you running in circles. Eat when you're hungry, you'll be fine.
