Strength training at home

Options
I still need to lose about 60 pounds but I really want to build muscle and tone as I go. So I'm looking to start adding strength training to my routine and I am wondering what I should to buy. Should I look into a home gym? Get a beach with a bar and different weights?

The Nike training club app has helped me a lot, you only need minimal equipment and I think the interface is really great. Best part - it's free! I just bought a few weights and a medicine ball and use several of the programs.

I would start with 12 ounce curls and work your way up from there.

Another option is the You are your own gym app or Mark Lauren's book for women: Body by You. If you go with that one, don't read the intro, just the workout, unless you like being spoken down to.

If you do not have a lot of weight to lose, it will likely take you quite some time to lose it. That is because the fat on your body will turn to muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat and thus the scale will not change too much at first.

Develop better balance. When doing things like brushing your teeth, stand on one leg and alternate legs every 30 seconds or so. This will not only strengthen your core muscles, but also burn a few calories. You can also do this during other activities like washing the dishes or cleaning the kitchen counters.

Splitting your restaurant meal in half, reserving a portion to eat and a portion to take home with you, can help you stay on track with your weight loss plan. Remove all temptation to overeat by requesting that the waiter put half of your meal in a to-go container before he even serves you the meal.

Before you eat a large meal, try to walk at least a half of a mile beforehand. This will help to reduce the cravings that you have so that you do not consume an excess amount of food. Walking can aid in reducing the calories that you put into your body.

Insufficient sleep may actually cause you to overeat, so sleep well to maintain your weight loss efforts! Somehow, scientists have discovered that lack of sleep increases the hormones associated with hunger and decreases the ones that make you feel fuller, which means a good night sleep is even more important than you thought!

A great way to lose weight is to enlist the services of a personal trailer. The average person probably doesn't know that much about fitness, and they get pretty intimidated upon entering a gym. With the help and guidance of a personal trainer, you'll be more equipped to reach your weight loss goals.

Don't let the weather demotivate your activities. Sometimes when it comes to weight loss, you could be really waiting on the chance to miss out on activities. You shouldn't let the weather give you that chance as you can create activities within the home that ensure you aren't losing out because of rain or snow.

To help yourself stay on track and accomplish your weight loss goals, plan your means in advance. When you plan ahead you can decide how much to eat and when. You will have an easier time staying with your weight loss program if you have a good plan and stick to it.

Another thing you can do to add to your weight loss program is to subscribe to a fitness magazine. There are a variety of magazines to choose from, but all of them will provide pictures of men or women that have healthy and fit physiques while also providing articles, recipes and workouts that you can mix into your existing program.

If you are looking to lose weight, you can do so on your own or with the help of others. Think about your needs and decide on the way you feel that you will be able to attain success with. Make use of friends and family, fitness professionals and consult media sources so you have a variety of information available to you.

You can lose weight regardless of how small you are, but you should focus on building muscle more than losing weight. The more muscle you have, the stronger and healthier you will be. The tips that have been provided above should help you become as healthy as you can be.

Invest in a power rack if you have to room in your home or garage. You will be able to strength train safely at home by yourself. You shouldn't need a very expensive one at holds over 1000 pounds. ****'s has one for $399. This is only if you are serious and want to strength train at home. They also have a half rack that cost less and will work great and take up a little less space. Also a good bench. The weights you can get cheap used.

Wow. Strong first post. Why am I pretty sure this is going to be spammed all over the boards?

OP, don't listen to 90% of that.

First, understand that you can't covert muscle to fat. You also can't build muscle while you're dieting/eating at a deficit.

That said, if you're weight training while dieting you CAN RETAIN muscle that you already have, which will result in you maintaining a higher resting metabolic rate and you'll probably be happier with the aesthetic results as you cut down on body fat - you'll look toned and fit. Failing to do resistance training while dieting can lead to muscle loss. No bueno.

So: you're totally 100% on track by wanting to weight train now! Weight training at home is an awesome option; it's what I did for about the first year. I had a weight bench and a series of dumbbells ranging from 3-45lbs. It was enough to keep me going for a while. With dumbbells, you can modify one of the barbell-type progressive lifting programs that focus on big, compound lifts (All Pro, Starting Strength, Stronglifts) to DB-appropriate lifts.

That said, knowing what I know now, and if I had the money and the space, I would get a bar and weights, a bench and a power rack. You'll be able to get some incredible workouts in that way, see great results with your physique and enjoy getting stronger :) There are some great books (Starting Strength is one) and YouTube videos that can help you learn the form. It's so much fun!
