What's your poison?

Holiday fat season is here and as we all make and break promises to ourselves about what we will or won't eat. I had one question: what's your weakness? What's the one thing you can't go without even though you know you should at holiday time?

For me it's Apple Pie. I love the stuff! Can't get enough of it. Would eat apple pie and nothing else for thanksgiving dinner if given the opportunity. Fresh apples not really my favorite but Apple Pie! I could go on for days about my love for apple pie.

what about apple pie made with fresh apples?
  • I'd be something called Rabanada, it's a kind of toast thats goes with milk/wine, sugar and cinnamon.
I think I'll manage to go without it this year but you never know... the thing is freaking good.
  • Pumpkin pie from Costco! I make a mean apple crumble pie for the family, but it's nothing to Costco's pumpkin pie! No, there won't be any at my table this year because I would eat it if it was. <sniff, sniff>

    Collards!!!!

Usually I have a small bit of turkey breast, potato salad and a load of collards. And Southern collard greens pretty much have no nutrient value left in them, lol, but are as tasty as they can be!! I've given up all the other tasty sides (pumpkin pie, candied yams, stuffing, gravy, mac and cheese, sweet tea and even cake).

We've had a few events the past few months where we've catered a feast similar to Thanksgiving and I've learned how to remain satified without over-eating. For me, it was primarily psychological and instances where "my eyes were bigger than my stomach". I fix snack-sized portions and drink lots of water, so even after having 2nds or 3rds, I've eaten less than I would have if I'd fixed a full plate in the beginning.

    LOL....then yes!
  • Mine is all of it. I love the whole dinner and usually eat 2 full plates. This year I am going at it diffrently I am only eatting one plate and only a little bit of each thing... I have worked very hard to lose the weight I have there is no way I am going to mess it up. I know me and if I slide a little then I will slide more in the future... ;)

Stuffing. Bread rolls. Carbs are my downfall! Also, pumpkin pie gets me every time.

Try mixing together cinnamon, sliced baked apples, granola, and oatmeal. Add a little margarine and water (and sugar if you must- but only a little!) and bake. It's like apple pie but a ton healthier. Good taste a texture to it too!

YES! omg potato latkes are sooo good. And my grandma's apple noodle kugel!
Although I've got to admit my poison is probably actually chocolate.

    Hi,
You could try making an apple crisp - similar taste, but made with a lot less calories.

Cake, there seems to be a lot of regular grocery store type vanilla super frosted birthday cake at work, for b-day's, retirement, appreciation week and I can't resist the stuff. Sooo good!

Don't forget Sufganiyot!! Fresh, hot, homemade, jelly filled doughnuts! Made them at home for the first time last year....O.M.G.
  • Indian Frybread!!! Flour soaked in oil! But its soooooooooooo delish~
  • cheesecake...my mom makes the best 3 chocolate (white, semisweet and dark) cheesecake...yummy!!! maybe just a sliver!
  • At the holidays my mom makes Key Lime pie - she actually has the local grocery store order limes from the Florida Keys so it's authentic. She puts a 4 inch meringue on top - so the pie is super tart and sweet at the same time. Yummy. That will be really hard to pass up this holiday season..... (sigh)

AWESOME plan! moderation in eating and continued exercising is the key to not running your progress off into the ditch. i LIKE the way you think! if we continue to do the same thing, we will continue to get the same results. i personally like the results i have gotten this past year. WHY would i run a year off in the ditch for one or two days?!?!?
  • Hi,

YES!!! and if you use sugar in the raw instead of white sugar, it does not spike your blood sugars the same as the white. i am ALL about apple crisp this year. add some fresh cranberries to give it an awesome taste and color.
  • for thanksgiving my favs are sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. This year, i am going to have a baked sweet potato ready for me (instead of the ones swimming in butter and brown sugar) and will have a small piece of my mom's pumpkin pie. Her crusts are killer yum!!!

But the REAL problem i have coming up is christmas sweets. Frosted sugar cookies, peanut butter fudge and snickerdoodles to be precise. Oh and the chocolate-pb-oatmeal no bake cookies that are like freakin' kryptonite to me! CAN. NOT. RESIST. MUST. EAT. SUGAR. YUM.

I will have to ration out my sweets... Its ok though, i am looking forward to wowing (or shutting up?) a cousin's husband who said this spring that "people like (me) are not built for doing half marathons" ... eat your words, jerk ;) Cant wait for our 12/26 morning run hahahahahhahaa

I work at a veterinary hospital, and every Christmas well-meaning pet owners lavish us with cookies and other delicious homemade treats. I'm dreading it this year! I absolutely LOVE good, homemade sugar cookies...
  • My mom's potatoes. mmmmmm
can't wait! i'm working out double time Thanksgiving morning just to be able to enjoy those guilt free.
    seconds? yes please!

actually, i just slice an apple (usually granny smith) up in a bowl, mix with cinnamon and a packet of splenda and microwave for 2 1/2 min. it's like apple pie without the crust:love: my weakness is probably the wine that would go with dinner. not a fan of much else alcoholic, but i love wine and usually these big feasts have yummy wine...

It was a REALLY bad idea for me to post this topic I just read through all the responses and felt all of my willpower crumble as my mouth watered. I am SOOO happy there is nothing in the house like that to eat right now but it all sounds so delicious. I will be eating vicariously through all of you this thanksgiving.
