sodium levels in black beans/other canned veggies

Sorry if this has been asked before, but is there an accurate way to determine how much sodium is in canned goods such as black beans once they have been rinsed?

Thanks for any help!

this was just brought up regarding tuna and the effectiveness of rinsing. I read an article that stated that if you rinse foods it removes up to 70% of sodium. Hope that helps

Sorry just found this seems does not effect beans just tuna.

Effect of water rinsing on sodium content of selected foods.
Vermeulen RT, Sedor FA, Kimm SY.
    Abstract

The sodium content of water-rinsed canned green beans, tuna, and cottage cheese was analyzed. A 3-minute rinse of tuna and cottage cheese resulted in sodium reductions of 80% and 63%, respectively, with no significant effect on iron content. Calcium was reduced by approximately 50%. Although rinsing had a minimal effect on the sodium in canned beans, replacing the canning brine with water before heating lowered salt content by 33%. This study shows that the simple and economical methods of water rinsing of tuna and cottage cheese and of heating green beans in tap water markedly lowered salt content.

Have you tried La Preferida Low Sodium black beans? Its what I buy to add to recipes. I tried making my own black beans and was a total failure at it. Sorry I keep re-editing its Sunday brain is moving slowly today.

    Get no salt added beans..

Kuners brand has them.. not sure what others..

I don't eat canned veggies.. so idk which ones are salt free there..
but great value canned tomatoes have salt free options as well.

I make refried black beans in a small crock pot
I use herbs and lime juice to give them flavor
the main thing is they need to soak overnight before turning them on all day to cook

Buy dried ones. then soak and cook a large batch and you can freeze the rest (with most beans) Not only is it so much cheaper you have control over the salt content

Thanks for the advice. I didn't realize I could make them in the crockpot myself. I will check into that option.
