I recently have gotten into strength training, and am starving after I take a class! I am eating appx 1500 to 1600 calories.I have no plans of eating more than that. They are usually around 5:45 or 6:45 ,so I usually eat dinner before I go.I was thinking about eating a late dinner once I return to balance it out or but I am hoping my body will get used to it and I wont need to eat after working out......Thoughts on this.......

Work a small post-workout snack into your daily calories on strength days. I typically have some yogurt and fruit, or a protein bar, or a protein & fruit smoothie.0

Could you save enough calories to have a small protein shake when you get home? I use one scoop of my protein powder in a half cup of low fat milk for about 115 calories.0

Eat a little something before, and have your dinner after. Or don't... Just find what works for you.
Also, don't be afraid to eat back the calories you burn. You body needs something to run on.0 -
You're tearing down the muscles while strength training and need to rebuild it, always a good idea to eat something after a workout like that, especially with protein. Personally, I need a good amount of food before and after a good strength workout, or my workout and recovery are garbage!!!
But Again, that's for me, don't be afraid to add a little food and see how you feel from there.0 -
Famished myself after strength training..I do a protein shake and a snack or meal..... plan for it for future reference. Lol...
edit: I eat before as well...0 -
Me too! I usually have a protein shake then either ice cream, yogurt with fruit & berries or waffles. Sometimes all of the above. If I don't eat enough I wake up hungry in the middle of the night or feel the need to eat whole cows with a side of bacon the next day.0

Tell me about it! No fun waking up in the middle of the night to a growling stomach. ....0 -
Sometimes I have some fruit or nuts before my workout if I'm going to be at the gym later in the evening but need to wait until after for dinner.0

Sorry - why no food afterwards???
Strenght training, you (supposed to) lift heavy - you depleate your glycogen storages - bash your muscles to a pulp and do not feed back afterwards??
After lifting you better eat and eat good if you want to maximise your work out. Carbs and proteins galore!
If you really want to cut off something it is fat after a workout - only reason being is - fat takes longer to be digested and hence slow down overall digestion which will result in taking longer for protein and carbs to be digested / absorbed.0 -
Yeah I don't understand the OP. If you're going to strength train you need to eat. This is like saying I expect to be able to drive 1000 miles but I refuse to put gas in my car - any ideas? Yeah, put gas in your car.0

Can I ask why you have no plans to eat more when you're changing your exercise, as people above have said you work more you need to eat more. I tend to have dinner after rather than before and have nuts/seeds, protein shake or whole milk before.0
-
We can't see what you're eating, but if you use the default settings, you're probably way underconsuming protein.0

I tend to eat upwards of 4-800 calories after my workouts- I'm starving- I know it and I make sure there is room for me to eat. I worked out- I'm hungry.0

You know it's funny - I get proper staving on non-training days, but on lifting days it seems to really blunt my appetite.0

Like others have said I have a snack before and dinner after. I either eat 2oz chicken (I like the Oscar Mayer carving board meats) with a string cheese or a protein bar or a small bag of cashews before with a full bottle of water then I go home and eat dinner. I also workout between 4-6 pm.0

I do lots of really small, protein packed meals. Always something before a workout and something after. Don't be afraid to experiment with your meals and your calories.0

LOL so weird. I"m complete opposite... if I'm not at work- I have an unexpected day off or whatever- I sit at home- sew- drink coffee- watch netflix- and have a light afternoon(2 PM) snack- and then go work out- and have a HUGE meal when I get back.0 -

I normally eat some raw almonds and/or banana prior to a work out and then a protein shake post workout.0

I always bring a snack for post-workout. I go to a functional training gym and in that half hour with my trainer, I burn more cals and energy than in the entire rest of the week, unless I also do the one-hour boot camp on Saturdays. As my friend and firefighter and bike instructor tells me, "you wouldn't expect your car to go very far without gas; why would you assume that your body can?" Going to bed hungry is not an option for me, as I will have trouble sleeping and likely eat a much larger breakfast than is in my eating plan.
Low-cal protein post-workout is probably your best bet. Small protein shake, some nuts and a low-fat cheese stick - good suggestions.0 -

It's a massive PITA since I'm trying to eat more on lifting days and less on non-lifting days....0 -
Thank you for all your responses,I really appreciate the positive responses. I can definitely add something before the work out and elect for a late dinner. In response to a few questions,I am not using default settings and although I do not plan to eat more that 1600,That is really easy to do throughout my day.My goals are realistic. Second, weights are relatively new to me,I love cardio and always have so when switching to something new,I appreciate the input from people who have experience! Thanks so much!0
