I am losing control.....!

God losing weight has never been this difficult! Back at home I would have time for workouts, work and other stuff... but since I started grad school the stress is getting to me! I'm scared of rice (which is my staple food) ruining my diet so I started to have cereal and bread for breakfast, lunch AND dinner! Kinda monotonous... and I keep falling off the wagon :( Any pointers/recipes for a vegetarian? (I don't eggs either);

  • Why are you scared of rice? As a vegetarian if you can eat chick peas and beans and even make curries from yoghurt. Try quorn marinaded in natural yoghurt with garlic , chilli and ginger for minimum of 20 mins. Fry onions (any any other veg you fancy ) mix in quern/yoghurt mixture cook for 15/20 mins and eat. Low calorie, vegetarian and quick

    Don't lose hope

  • Well unless your having oatmeal cereal likely isn't doing you any favors. You could try blending some fruit up to make a smoothie. Dunk an apple in some peanut butter. Eat a banana and a handful of nuts. Buy a plant based protein powder and make shakes for breakfast. Throw together a fruit salad.

    Lunch and dinner, you can make wraps either in tortillas or lettuce and you can throw in some tofu or nuts for protein. You can also make a tortilla or pita pizza, pretty self explanatory and they freeze well for easy meals on busy nights. You can make tofu pasta or look up a recipe on how to make sweet potato fries (they are addictive and not really bad for you) and have that with some tofu or with a salad that has nuts in it. Basically any recipe that uses a meat you can replace that meat with tofu. Make a stir fry. Buy some tofu hot dogs for nights when you're too tired to cook. Make honey garlic tofu with noodles. Make a salad and throw some nuts in. Snack on celery dipped in peanut butter, they also make almond butter which some people love.

    Oh and if you love rice, then incorporate it, just have it with some veggies and protein to balance it out.

    Anyways that's just off the top of my head, hope it helps!

    This recipe sounds really good.

    OP- don't be scared of rice, just use good portion control and include it in your diet.

    I keep cooked rice, drained and rinsed black beans, cheese, tortillas and some sauteed vegetables in my fridge at all times to throw together quick burritos and quesadillas. I will also add taco "meat" which is soy crumbles cooked with taco seasoning if I have it on hand. Meal comes together completely in under 10 mins.

    Quorn contains egg so it's no good for OP. Tofu or soya 'meat' would work though.

    Eating bread and cereal isn't so bad if done in moderation, but truth be told, they are processed foods with lots of sugar. Personally, I use the rule that if it isn't a natural food "non processed" I probably shouldn't eat it. I do eat morning star's veggie black bean patties, but that is probably about my only exception. Try eating whole wheat if you can handle it. I am fine with the 35 calorie bread personally but I can't stand the crust, so the buns are out! Instead I just use bagel thins if I need a bread substitute. I don't personally recommend it, but I burn nearly 4,000 calories some days, so a little grain won't kill me. I won't go on and on because it looks like you are getting a lot of good advice from others. I wish you the best of luck on your journey!

    Thank you for all the suggestions!

    I'm scared of rice because we stopped eating white rice back home, and eating white rice is kind of like eating sugar. I mean, it's not exactly nutrient rich. And the place where I come from, people have no control over the rice quantities they eat. So I will have to measure the rice I eat to be accountable, and it's kind of hard on a daily basis.
    On the other hand, tortillas, bread and cereal are a little more quantifiable.....by cereal I mean shredded wheat/oats/raisin bran. Not the sugary cereals you find.
    Wraps are a great idea! Why didn't I think of that? Veggies and soybean on tortillas are just yum.
    I could shoot for pasta, but again, my roommates buy white pasta so that presses the panic button for me again. Is whole wheat pasta very expensive? We live on a tight budget as you may expect so I won't be able to buy something pricey.
