High Fat Diet

I am eating a VERY high fat diet... help me keeps my calories low, and helps me stay away from sugar. I want to get the fat consumption a little lower, but I'm nervous that if I eat less fat, I will start binging again. Any advice? Feel free to check out my diary (but maybe not yesterday... major PMS binge). ;)

Thanks!!
xx E

How high is your fat intake?

Protein keeps hunger away too, so start to eat more protein
  • Just fixed it! Thanks

My fat intake can range to 15-80 grams over the suggested each day. I want to keep it at about 20-30 over the suggested. I am okay with a high fat diet, but not THIS high. I am worried about my heart,
  • I do eat a lot of protein... but can afford to switch to primarily fish proteins that are lower in fat (buying fish every couple days gets so expensive). I get my protein from nuts, almond butter, beef, cheese, eggs, and turkey mostly. If I shouldn't be worried, then great! It just seems like a serious fat overload.

looking at your diary it doesn't seem particularly high. You may want to try to add a little more protein (and if you like eating fat, then reduce the carbs in order to hit your calorie target).

I went from a high carb, medium protein, medium fat diet to a low carb, medium protein, high fat diet (with fewer overall calories, thus, losing weight) and my blood pressure and cholesterol levels improved.

Agree that higher fat keeps you satisfied and make it easier to stay in caloric balance.

Okay, honestly you are not eating that high fat of a diet. I'm not a doctor, but I don't 'think you are anywhere near where you need to be worried about your heart (and there is evidence now coming to light that a diet high in good fats sn't actually bad for your heart). My diary is open and you are welcome to take a look. I have the goals set at 40/30/30, I think?, and I am consistently over in fat--usually about 80g/day and I average about 1500 cals a day or so. It usually works out to about 35% of my diet.

If you want to bring it down, maybe lay off the nuts a little, but truly I would not worry about it at all.

awesome, TomfromNY! I totally relate. I was junking out on pasta and buffalo wings before I got this started. Now its salads and meats... and a hefty mess of fat. I do work out a decent amount these days. I can definitely add more protein (I love protein), but I have no idea why it's low. I eats meat and nuts like a fiend.

Maybe I should start eating yogurt again?

Wow, awesome!!! Thanks!!! I love the way I'm eating, and if I can keep this up without hurting my heart (or cholesterol levels?) then am all about it. I am hardy ever hungry, and only really get binge-y once a month. ;)

You're perfectly fine. Maybe try and get a little more protein.

I love that stuff, but I mostly only eat Sheep's Milk yogurt (aka. the single most delicious food on earth) due to a mild lactose unfriendliness.

Yes, like I said, not a doctor ;) but it is generally understood now (I hope!) that the low fat craze from the 80s and 90s was a huge mistake and that fats are very good for us. As long as your fats are coming from good sources--nuts, avocado, olive oil, even some dairy--it keeps you full longer and is not bad for you at all. Of course if your diet was high in fat due to a daily Burger King habit, that might be a different story, but you seem to be eating very well to me. I would keep up with the lean proteins, good fats, everything you're doing. Like I said, if you want to take it down a bit, maybe subbing the nuts for a serving of yogurt or cottage cheese would be good. But I eat similarly, which is why I wouldn't stress. :)

Eat non-starchy vegetables to get the carbs you want.

Heck yes. I love veggies!!! Roasted brussels sprout are a staple. Lately I've been roasting them with a touch of honey mixed in with the oil.... so. yum.

I don't know how smart this is (since I'm not a doctor) but I tend to ignore the fats I get from nuts, fish, etc., thus labeled "healthy" fats (I only use that term because I don't remember if they're saturated or unsaturated). I do pay close attention to the fats on the list of foods my doctor gave me because my bad cholesterol is creeping up now that I'm getting older.

I haven't looked at your diary but that's just my two cents for what it's worth. And chicken is chocked full of protein but I didn't see that on your list of meats that you are eating, plus no carbs there if plain.
